Well, What I did was I sat down with a travel agent and told them what time of the year that I personally thought was a good time to go, and then we went from there... for example, Cuba is very cheap, so it was definately an option for us... however, we found out that weather was not ideal during January when we wanted to go, so that quickly changed our minds... look for one who specializes in destination weddings.. look up popular sites, and then youll quickly learn what you like and dislike... ask others for advice like you are doing now too! I am going to Jamaica, it was affordable and seemed really nice...

Welcome!  I felt exactly how you felt when my FI and I decided to have a DW, it is normal I promise!

First thing we did was research a bunch of locations (Mexico, Domincan, Jamaica ect).  We were able to eliminate some locations, such as mexico, right away (My family wasnt to fond of going there, and to get legally married it is quite a process).  We then decided on jamaica.  From there we researched pretty near every resort and narrowed it down to maybe 8 resorts we were considering.  From there we went to a travel agent who was able to provide us with more information about the resorts and other things to think about (resort size, distance from airport, amount of things to do for guests, food ect).  We then narrowed it down to maybe 4 resorts and once again went back to our travel agent.  She was able to provide us with pricing for all the resorts and that helped us make our final decision on resort.  From there I contacted the wedding coordinator by email to see what dates were available for the week we chose.  We then chose our wedding date and time.  After that things all fall into place!  Good luck, and don't let it stress you out so much!  I felt like once we booked our wedding date and time all the stress lessened!

I completely agree with you. I knew I wanted to get married in Cancun and just began looking at travel websites and reading up on the climate of the area for our wedding time frame. Just decide whether you are looking for a family resort or adults-only, that's a good way to start as well.

Congrats!

I know how you feel! When we first decided on a DW I was SO overwhelmed by how many options there were. We ended up choosing based on cost and what location we liked the best. In the end we decided that Mexico was the most affordable for airline tickets and for all inclusive resorts. Once we decided on Mexico, it was all about the resorts! Check out the Del Sol Wiki, there are thousands of pictures of weddings in the Riviera Maya area at lots of different resorts. This really helped me! Even though the weather is not supposed to be at it's best there, it is still usually beautiful (and cheaper because of low season).

Once we had our location, we wanted to give everyone as much notice as possible so they could save/request time off. We decided on Message in a Bottle save the dates. Here are ours: http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/thread/69083/my-std-message-in-a-bottle-pics

It all comes down to whats important to you and your hubby to be! It is your day and all your friends and family will support you in the end. Good luck and happy planning! :)

The Mayan Riviera is truly a beautiful location for a wedding as well a great vacation place for your guests.   The forum is filled with a lot of very helpful reviews and information.  Best of luck with all your planning!!

Warmest wishes,

Lori
