Hello ladies!

Hi everyone,

I am getting married in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.  At the moment we have about 20 people coming down to celebrate with us and we are super excited! I am so happy to have this forum to vent to people who are going through the same excitement and stress as I am!

My DW planner highly sugguested that my fiance and I get married at the courthouse right before we leave so we dont run into trouble getting copies of our marriage certificate, as she said it takes forever and you have to have them legally translated in the US and it gets very expensive.  Hopefully someone can answer my question about this which is: if I get married a few days or the day before I leave, my last name changes right? so does that make my passport and what not invalid? will I have trouble getting back to the states?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks ladies!

-Jac

My travel agent told us to do the same thing. I think that as long as you book your tickets in your maiden name then you will not have any problems. You will have to go change your name after the wedding, I have friends that were married here for over a year before the legally changed their last name. I think we are going to get married here first just so we do not have to worry about the headache of getting everything, and in Mexico you have to have a blood test and arrive like 3 or 4 days early, so it just makes sense to do it that way. I don't think we are going to let anyone know that we are doing it that way, we will just go to the courthouse to have it legal but we will celebrate our anniversary on the Mexico date. I hope this helps!

Welcome!  I'm sure you won't have any problem as long as you don't legally change your name until you return.  Your plane tickets and passport will have to be in your maiden name and then when you get back you can change everything!

Nope, you won't have any trouble at all.  I got married in the courthouse several months before the "real" wedding in Mexico, with no issues.  You have to apply to change your name at the Social Security office (it doesn't happen automatically), and you have to have the marriage certificate to do so, so you'll be fine.

Once you get back, if you decide to change your name, just make an appointment at the SS office and look up what paperwork you have to bring with you.  Once you do that, you can change your driver's license and passport, credit cards, loans, etc. lol.

PS I highly support the courthouse route...you don't want to be running around to government offices in a foreign language the day before your wedding, or worse yet - getting blood tests or other medical exams.  It's not romantic, but a legal ceremony in the courthouse is so much less hassle.  I recommend it to all the brides I work with!
