To registry or not to registry??

Recommended Posts

We too were having guests telling us to register. Especially people who were not attending. I have never heard of the cash registries but I think it is a great idea. My fiancee and I already own a home so there are few things that we need. We do want new pots and pans, a patio set, and other big items. Having people put money towards these things would be great.

Where can you register for a cash registry?

MY FI and I combined homes so there is really not a lot we need.  We, too, feel uncomfortable registering.  Of course, our friends and family's presence is gift enough, however, if people still feel the need....we were thinking of other ideas like maybe suggesting in lieu of presents please make a donation to a favoritie charity or charities in our name....still kicking th can on this one...dizzy.gif

Elissae - we are in the same boat. We don't really NEED things, but know there are people who aren't able to attend and will want to give a gift. My FI was more comfortable with a traditional registry, so we went for upgrades on things - small appliances (that kick-butt blender for frozen drinks!), new towels, new comforter sets, sheets, etc. Worst case we'll get gift cards that we can add up towards some of the upgrade items.

I really, really like the idea of either a travel registry (help us pay for our wedding-moon!), or deposit a gift (http://www.depositagift.com). DAG is a cash registry, but you actually register for items. then people contribute for them, and you can decide how/when/what to buy.

I do like the idea of "in lieu of gifts, please consider a donation to our favorite charities" and then list them. My experience with that has been that most people don't want to do this unless they happen to be big supporters of that particular charity as well.

just some thoughts for you!

AllieH,

I like the way you are doing it!!!  Of course, who doesn't like gifts?  I could sure use that upgraded blender/margarita machine!  LOL!  I want to redo my bedroom linens!!!  I know what you mean...some people would rather give a gift than make a donation...and I am sure my friends/family will throw me a surprise shower for I have never been married and they are all going to want me to experience the whole tradition of marriage and what comes with it.

I have heard about these travel registries and think that is a great idea, too.

Not sure if my FI will "come around" on this.  I am sure this summer once we are back on our boat amongst our friends every weekend...and if the subject comes up, they may sway him....we'll see.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me. 1-pray.gif

I love your "thanks for booking" quote!  We will probably have to use something similar.

That way it's still money, you get a great trip out of it and guests feel like they aren't just giving cash!

We have registered for the same reason as most, all the questions about it! But we really got bored of it so only really rang in our bigger ticket items! We really need to go in and add some smaller things but we have lived together for 4 years and own all our things so really dont need a toaster or towels!

We have sent out to invites to everyone but when guests book we are going to send out an itinerary or "thanks for booking" invite that will say something like

"We are so pleased that you will be joining us in paradise to celebrate our marriage.  Please know that your presence is your present and it means the world to us!

If anyone else has any other ideas I would love to hear them!

P-shaw. As much as I adore my FI, he sucked at the whole registering thing. I mean royally sucked. He couldn't get over feeling greedy (and yet, somehow he was the one who really wanted us to register. figure that one out!!) lol just let him know your plans..and get out there and shop. the scanner is fun.
