Why is a forum "locked"?

So I found a thread that I thought would help me understand the 150 post requirement and wanted to post on there but it is locked. Why is this?

Sometimes a thread is locked if there are other existing threads that already discuss the issue or if the issue has been discussed at length. The mods do that to keep repetive threads down to a minimum & to save forum space. Hope that helps.

Yolanda is right, if it is no longer beneficial to have a thread open we will close it and it becomes a read-only thread.  When we have done this it will say the thread is locked.
