Luggage Sizes Help!

Ladies I need some advice!  I have not traveled to often, and not for many years.  I have found a bag I love and would like to use as a carry on. Here's the dilemma.  The bag is slightly bigger then the size listed for a carry on for our plane.  Do any of you seasoned travelers know if this will be a problem? I don't want to get to the airport and have to check it and pay for it!

The carry on dimensions listed for our plane are:

9in x 16in x 20in

The dimensions of the bag I love are:

9.5in x 14.5in x 21in

Any advice would be appreciated!

They have this metal thing where you go through security and it's supposed to be a size guide for your carry on. If it can fit into it then it's fine. I don't think an extra inch is going to be a deal breaker and you probably will still be able to squeeze it in there.

All the flights I go on always seem to have visibly oversized carry ons stuffed in the top compartments. Occasionally if they run out of room in the compartments and there is just no way to squish and squeeze anymore, I've seen them tell the owners of the oversized carry ons to that they need to check them in but other than that, they usually let it slide but I guess that'll depend on the airline and the mood of the staff.
