I thought I should take a minute and introduce myself, my name is Nicole and I live in New Brunswick Canada while I'm not officially engaged yet my bf purchased my E-Ring and its sent away for sizing :) Once we get it back he will propose! We have been together for 8 years on April 26, 2011. I'm thinking we should get married in spring 2013. It will be our 10th anniversary near our wedding.

I have always known I was a DW, the thought of walking down a church aisle with 200 people staring at me makes me want to vomit, lol. I love palm trees and starfish and sand and the ocean!! :)

I have always thought Punta Cana would be a great place to get married but lately (after a vacation to the Florida Keys) I started thinking about Key West. It is a lot simpler to get married in Florida. I am concerned about the price for friends and family. Hotels are expensive in Key West and you don't have the all paid for benefit of the All inclusive. Things just get more expensive in Key West.

How did you or are you choosing your venue? What factors are you considering?

Welcome Nicole,

I had the luxury of attending my FSIL wedding at the Beach Palace in Cancun last October.  FI and I decided right then that DW was probably the way we wanted to go.  We didn't want to do the same resort as we like texture so palm tree, grass, etc...so we stayed in the same resort family and chose the Moon Palace Resort.  It was important to us to do the AI thing because it would allow us the opportunity to have our guests know how much money they need to spend before going there and getting sticker shock.

I hope you find the resort of your dreams, and happy early engagement.

I'm thinking the same thing about the sticker shock...AI is perfect that way. AI is also good cause it keeps everyone nearby (which may be a good or bad  thing lol)  If we decide to marry in Key West people may not be able to afford to stay at the same hotel (some hotels are upwards of $400/night)

Big decisions!

Welcome!

I always knew I wanted a DW and didn't even have to convince FI since he was the one who first brought it up when we got engaged!  My family was all for it as well which really helped.  For us the hardest part was choosing a location.  We first considered Maui but found that because there are no all inclusive the price would have been a lot more money for everyone. Then we considered Mexico.  We looked at possibly every resort in the Mayan Riviera and just couldn't find one that felt right that were still decently priced for family and friends.  Also, to get legally married in Mexico it can take alot of work and money!  We then thought of Punta Cana, but once again found the legal requirements to be quite confusing and whatnot!  We then decided on Jamaica as getting legally married is pretty simple (no blood tests and document translation) and we fell in love with a resort with a beautiful gazebo on the ocean!  Not to mention we got a price that everyone was happy with.  We did consult our Travel Agent and she was the one to give us some great resorts to think about and compare, and then we did a lot of research on each resort.

I have never been to the Key West but I'm sure its beautiful.  I guess you just need to determine if all inclusive is important to you and your potential guests.  Also, a nice think about Key West is that people could choose to only come for a few days verse a week at a resort, which might be a nice option for some guests and would help keep costs down.

Good luck deciding!  And happy planning:)

I heard Jamaica was pricey so if you found a good price I will definitely check it out to see what I can find. This is exactly why I started this thread cause I never in a million years would have concerned Jamaica. I am also concerned about the legalities of Mexico. DR doesn't seem too bad but still a bit of work. FI is divorced so that's more paperwork.

Florida is simple-go to the court house, get your marriage license, get married. No waiting period for non Florida residents.  Another benefit of Florida is after the wedding people can choose to do what they want with their vacation-Disney World etc. We are from Canada too so a trip to Florida is a nice vacation.

I think it really depends where in Jamaica you go and what resort, some we looked at were really expensive and knew it was out of our price range!

Florida would be a lot simpler.  And it would give your guests a chance to experience some other things Florida has to offer which might be nice for them!

I agree that once we opened our eyes to Jamaica, I knew it was the right choice! To me, Jamaica seemed like a true "destination" and a trip that I probably wouldn't make unless it was for my DW! i also felt confident that Jamaica is a very safe country and found the hotels very reasonably priced.

good luck!
