Please help sistahs! Recommendation on Mayan Rivera venue (70-80pple, November 2011) - I am not above bribery ;)

Hi there!

 

Glad I found this site, but was hoping to get some responses.

We are looking for an intimate feel at a gorgeous ocean view resort, with good food, that accommodates kids, but is not a noisy wedding factory where you feel like you are waiting in line for your turn - e.g. classy, but god for kids, away from the I only come to Mexico to get hammered crowd (not that we don't love our drink mind you - just don't want that to be the defining part of the hotel

 

Probably need anywhere from 30-40 rooms.

 

So far I am in between the Karisma properties (Sensatori if large crowd or Beach if smaller) & Dreams Tulum...but open to others.

Menu selection looks MUCH better at Karisma properties that Dreams resorts and dreams seems like they have a ton more add-ons to shell out as well.

 

Any suggestions?

Just got back from our wedding at Dreams Tulum, we had 40 people, your right, it does accomodate kids well, the resort and gardens are gorgeous, it is small and intimate, private beach property and not a major party feel at all, which is exactly what I wanted, it is sort of off the beaten path which i liked but it does take about 2 hours to get there from Cancun. There are several restaurants on the property and they were all very good, I am picky about good quality food and honestly it was all wonderful, the sushi was to die for, the italian and French were amazing as well. You couldn't be dissapointed with the food here. I will post pictures soon, we brought our own photographer and we had so many gorgeous places to shoot around this area, cenotes, local villages, the market and beaches of tulum. If you have ANY questions feel free to ask, i'm still adjusting to the weather at home and wishing I was eating there and being catered to.....sigh.

Congrats and glad to hear it all went well - looking forward to seeing your pictures.

 

I love Tulum but am not sure it is the best choice since many of our guests have your children so a 2 hour drive, after a 5 hour flights just doesn't seem right.

 

Did you ever go on a scouting trip?

My fiance and I are going next week and are trying to finalize our hotel list.

 

We are thinking about the following:

Karisma (Azul Beach and Sensatori)

Ceiba Del Mar

Riu Palace

Dreams Rivera (your sister property)

Iberostar (maybe the Paraiso Lindo & Tucan)

Sandos Playacar

El Taj Condos

 

Possibly the Now Sapphire & Grand Palladium for shitsn'giggles

 

Pretty wide range from small to mid size to the monsters with a condo only option for good measure.

I jsut got married at Iberostar Tucan, Great location children friendly and the beach is great for a wedding.  we had 45 guest. I am not a picky eater so the food was good to me. but i tell everyone resrot food is resort food... you dont go to mexico for food unless you want to eat what they have locally.

 

Garbiela is the WC name and she is great... You should check them out. This iberostar is two resort which shar one pool so its big but much smaller than the other Iberostar and Riu... If you have any question please ask, there is so many great things i can tell you about this resort. Customer services is fantastic. 

 

its also located In playacar which is in the gated area like the RIU.. we scouting many resorts even the Riu Palace and we did not like the beach location for the wedding it was right in the middle of everything on the beach so you see people everywhere.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!   We have photographed many weddings at Dreams Tulum and consistently has received great reviews from the brides and their families about the location.   We have been told the added time to the drive was worth it.  Especially if families are traveling together, the time goes pretty quick.   Wendvipo had a good summary of the comments we hear.

Check out the Ocean Turquesa, I was there about 4 years ago and its only a 20 to 30 minute drive from the airport.  Loved the lobby, you could see the ocean from it and the beach was nice.  Our room was an ocean view and we didn't have to upgrade or pay extra for this at the time.  They have a kids pool and I think there was a kids club there too.

 I forgot to mention in my previous post for brides looking to get married in or around Tulum with regards to distance.   The construction of the new overpass on the freeway going through Playa del Carmen to  Tulum is now completed and cuts down on driving time considerably.  What 6 months ago took 25 - 30 minutes can now be done in 5 or less.    There was also an overpass constructed in Puerto Moreles which has also cuts down driving time even more.

I'm getting married at Dreams Puerto Aventuras in a few weeks. We were looking for a lot of the same things out of a resort, and finally settled on this one for a few reasons:

 

-only 45 minute drive from the airport. We LOVED the way Dreams Tulum looked, but 2 hours was just too far for us to ask our guests to drive.

-We have family who have vacationed at this resort. To support what wendvipo said, the food at dreams is supposed to be excellent. The family who went there are both world travelers, and swear that the sushi was amazing, seafood excellent, and one said she had the best steak she's ever had there. 

-Being 45 minutes south of Cancun meant we were far enough away from the "party" crowd. 

-While not kid-centric like some of the other resorts we saw, this one definitely had kids activities without being overtly all about kids. Basically, a resort for adults where kids would feel welcome too, but without being over the top. Does that make sense?

 

Good luck with your search! If you haven't already, you should check out some of the other boards on here about the specific resorts. These girls have eat, slept, and breathed them for months now and should be able to answer any questions you have. Everyone here has been extremely helpful!
