Two Hundred Sit-Ups Program

A friend of mine did the 200 Sit-Ups program this year and was able to do 200 consecutive sit-ups at the end of 6 weeks. They have a free pocket guide and a $3 iphone app to help you log your progress and handle the timing (lucky me, I have a crappy blackberry, but an egg timer would work also).

They also have a program to do 100 consecutive push-ups, but I'm not even thinking about it since I have NO arm strength!

I'm starting this week. Has anyone done this program?

She also has been working out like a fiend, lost 60 pounds in the past year and she's only about 5' 1". So the flat belly was a combo of both working out, but she said she really toned up her tummy doing this. No six-pack but when she flexes they're rock hard.

I had a trainer tell me that sit-ups aren't a good workout for women because it can make the stomach area wider. You see a lot of female trainers who are boxy because they've built up their stomach muscles so much. Anyway, just some food for thought!

I did the situp and crunch program along with c25k for a few weeks last year and really saw an improvement.  Honestly, my goal wouldn't even be 100 push-ups or 200 sit ups, it would just be to get in shape.  I think I was up to 20 consecutive push-ups, up from barely able to complete 3 in a row initially, but that also means that in the few minute session, you are doing way more then 20 since you do it multiple times.  Initially the push-ups were hardest for me, but they got easier as they went on, the sit ups are still hardest for me.

And for those worried about being boxy, I'm sure you could do any version of the sit up you want.  Like the side crunch which is good for thinning womens middles (i think anyway!).  I just started c25k up again last week and I plan to add these back as well.

If you want to work on your mid-section, I recommend trying Jillian Michaels Six-Week, Six-Pack.  I only just bought it but the workout seems more realistic than laying there just doing sit ups.  I agree with her when she says you can't get a flat tummy just from pounding out sit-ups.  It is a combination of movements such as the plank pose, side plank, etc that will help.  She incorporates so many different movements that aren't sit ups in the program and I can tell you, my abs burn when I'm done the workout!

Just some food for thought! :)
