Any teacher newbies?

I will hopefully be finishing my first year of teaching in the summer of 2012.  We set our date for June after school lets out.  I was afraid it would be frowned upon for me to take so much time off during my first year of teaching.  Also we found out that it is considered the off season, at least in Jamaica, to go during the summer making it cheaper for everyone.  Hope this helps!  Happy planning!!

Thanks for all the feedback ladies! It turns out that our Christmas holidays are Dec 23-Jan 9 next year, so we are able to go during the second week, after New Years. Our quotes were about $1000 cheaper per person compared to leaving on December 26th. Everything worked out in the end!

Good luck with you planning, everyone :)

I'm a teacher as well, and I'm trying to choose the best time (reasonable ticket prices, time for guests to save money and, sooner rather than later in summer 2012).

Any suggestions?  How are you able to take time off?  I heard that you would have to get a sick note because leaves without pay wouldn't be approved for weddings!!  Help! Please!

I planned my wedding for June, as soon as school lets out, and our rates aren't bad.  I can tell you that I know of several girls at my district who have taken 5 of their personal days to take a week off for their wedding/honeymoons.  I think it really depends on your districts policy with personal days and how many you have.  I couldn't imagine they'd allow sick day usage?  All districts "frown" upon it, but I've never seen it rejected.

Hey Jszy10 and Ali!

Thanks for your responses.  I'm thinking July will be the best time since once again we'll be ending school at the end of June. I also it depends on your school board and location/country.

I'll look into the number of "personal days" we're allowed.  The sick note idea was a suggestion of a colleague of mine who said they had to extend a long weekend using a sick note to get married since a leave without pay wasn't an option.  I dunnooooo?!!!

Thanks for your response. I am also a teacher and thinking of getting married in April 2012, during spring break. I don't want to wait until the summer because prices will be higher and because I will be teaching in the summer. However, the island we're getting married on, requires visitors to reside for at least three business days before applying for a license, which means that we wouldn't be able to get married until the end of spring break. So I'm considering taking days off after spring break to enjoy a full honeymoon.

Have you thought about getting married over the Christmas break? That is what I am doing. I'm not sure where you are from, but usually we get two weeks off. That should help with the time crunch.
