My Christmas engagement

Recommended Posts

Let me preface this by saying that we've been together for 9 years, and I've been waiting patiently (and at times impatiently) for a long time.  We went "ring shopping" as early as 2 years ago, and more seriously this past summer. I said I wanted to wear the ring as soon as he proposed, so I wanted him to get the real thing instead of proposing with just a diamond or a dummy ring.  We had a vacation in August, that passed without a proposal. Then my birthday, then our 9th anniversary, still nothing.  I was getting antsy.  I figured I'd have to wait until Christmas. Then, one day, on December 12th...

We went to a tree farm to cut our own Christmas tree for the first time, with his brother and his fiancee.  On our way home, he was all excited, insisting that we put up the tree that night. I was a little reluctant, but we went and got the decorations from the storage room anyway (we live in a condo, so it's all the way down in the parking garage and kind of annoying to go there).  We came up and set the tree up, but we couldn't decorate is anyway because we forgot the lights and the skirt down in storage.  So we decided to leave it until the next day, and went about our usually Sunday night business - I took my makeup off and changed into grungy clothes, and was browsing the web.  He sat down on the sofa to watch the Simpsons.  Then he called me out of the bedroom, telling me to come put the first ornament on the tree.  I figured he really really wanted to decorate that day. So I go to the living room, and he's holding out to me a different-looking ornament that I've never seen before, with a huge grin on his face.  Then I realized there was a ring dangling inside the ornament.  Then he went on one knee and did the proposal.  I just kept wanting to hug him, holding the ornament behind his back, not wanting to let go of him.  Finally I did and he opened it up and cut the string that was holding the ring up, and he put it on my finger, and I love it!!  I didn't take it off when I went to sleep that night :)

Congratulations! Wow, you've been one patient woman, don't think I'd have been so patient as you :P That sounds like such a sweet proposal :) Have lots of fun planning :)

Your ring is pretty similar to mine too :) And your proposal nearly was as well, but we decorated our tree with his sister so that didn't work out lol

Yes, I have been patient. We started dating first year university, so it took us a while while we finished undergrad, then I went to grad school in a different city for 2 years, and then we moved out on our own... it's just never a good time, money is always tight.  But he's really happy that we waited until he could afford a nice ring. He doesn't believe in upgrading later :)

Thanks.  I'm so happy with it.  Originally I wanted the same type of setting but with a very thin band set with tiny tiny diamonds. Not like a typical channel setting, but very very fine.  However, we couldn't find anything like that, and he was going to custom make it, but in the end he decided against it and went for the solitaire, thinking I would just swap out the setting if I wanted to.  But I love it, I don't want to change it at all.  I love the diamond so much, I don't want anything to distract from it.  I totally see why people like solitaires now.
