Why are you having a destination wedding?

Recommended Posts

We are having a DW for a few reasons.

1.  Ever since I was a child I knew I would get married on the beach (In elementary school I wrote a story once about how I would get married in Jamaica, and now I'm actually getting married in Jamaica!)

2.  My parents both have 12 siblings and both are youngest in the family.  That means way to many aunts, uncles, cousins, ect!! (We figured it out, there is almost 220 family we would have to invite)

3.  We didn't want to spend a small fortune on a wedding- our DW is much cheaper (we are paying most of it ourselves)

4.  My brother had a failed engagement and I seen how much planning and what kind of expenses were involved with an at home wedding and I knew I didnt want that for myself!

We both love JAMAICA and could not grasp the thought of spending thousands of dollars for a wedding ceremony and reception that only lasts a few hours. Instead, we are making an entire weekend and vacation out of it, not only for us, but for our guests. I want them to leave saying "that was the best wedding EVER!"

Shortly after we got engaged, my husband said, "I want to marry you on an island."  How could I say no to that? ;)

We picked the Bahamas because most of our guest list was coming from the Midwest, and it was shorter distance/easy access so people could more fully enjoy their vacations rather than having to sacrifice for travel.

WOW...I thought we had a lot of ppl to invite.  My husband is one of eight and that would mean, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, etc. But also, we are from New York City, the captial of the world and EVERYthing is extremely expensive, weddings average 100K here.  This is a vow renewal for us, so something simple with our closest family and friends was the perfect idea!

Always wanted to go to Dominican Republic! There it is! I am so happy with my decision and as some other ppl mentioned...it is YOUR day so spend it YOUR way! Happy planning!!!!

There was just no way I was going to invite that many people!!  Not to mention the cost of that for all those people.

I couldnt agree more, its your day and you need to spend it how you want!!

I went to a friends away wedding in Cuba last year and it was just such an awesome time I was sold on the destination wedding.  Cost is the main thought, Im going to invite my whole family (I just had a family reunion the past summer, and the big question was where and when was the wedding?) So I guess thats about 100 invites I will send out.  I dont know how many would actually come, but Im interested to see just how many will.  So Probably about 200 invites in total.  Been dragging my heals on doing up a list

Same here, travel is a passion of ours, and both of us have parents who have 6 siblings. So a HUGE extended family is not realistic and I don't want to settle for a shabby potluck, thrown together wedding. We've put up with some whining, but I think everyone who goes will be glad they did. I just feel like I'm under a lot of pressure to produce a fabulous reception

We are having a destination wedding for the intimacy and adventure. We have been together for over 10 yr and have a 8 yr old. So we wanted something special not just for us but for her to remember. We have gotten a lot of flack and been told we are being selfish so it's hard. But we have never traveled anywhere together before and thought that it would be a great way to get married and have an awesome family vacation.
