Tomas to pass over Turks & Caicos

I'm hoping Krys is around and can keep me abreast of everything going on, on the island. I am crossing my fingers and praying that this storm doesn't do damage to T&C. I have been unable to reach Diane so far. I tried sending emails, Monday, yesterday and today...nothing. Not sure if internet service is down on the island or having any problems. We have been having heavy rains here in Miami so I can only imagine they have been having lots of bad weather as well. I'm worried!

I just saw this on NASA's site. Sounds like there may be a lot of rain...but not a hurricane

A Tropical Storm Watch has now been posted for Jamaica, and Haiti, the Dominican Republic, southeastern Cuba, the southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands should watch Tomas' track.

Tomas is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches over much of Haiti with possible isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches.

Tomas is now predicted to strengthen into a tropical storm and not reach hurricane strength. An upper level trough is predicted to steer a stronger Tomas through the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti by Friday.

We're all good, sunny all day today, winds around 14mph and seem to be picking up (but the breeze is nice), will probably be wet and windy friday afternoon through saturday, but it's only tracking for a tropical storm and the mountains of Haiti may push it back down to a depression.  It's looking to be well north of us by sunday/monday.

Provo has really high building standards, we weathered Hannah (cat 1) and Ike (cat 4-5)  3 years ago within 3 days of each other with a few trees down but no structural damage at resorts and most homes, so people are stocking up on alcohol (LOL) and we're pulling in deck furniture etc.  I don't know anyone that's boarding up (we ususally put up shutters for a cat 2 and above.)   All of the old timers/boat captains/weather gurus on island are not concerned given the track and course (although I expect Sailing club will be cancelled on Sunday for the kids LOL).  If winds get above a certain speed the power company will cut off power to be safe, so we are making sure the kids dvd players/nintendos and our ipods are all charged as well as checking flashlights and candles, but I have been through quite a few depressions/storms without power loss.

I know the wedding coordinators on island are scrambling as we have a few weddings on Saturday so they are trying to get couples to move them to Friday, which changes things and they may be a bit crazy with those.

We have had a lot of quick downpours this week which is highly unusual; it will be sunny and hot and then for 45 minutes at some point during the day it will pour down buckets and then be sunny again.   Because of that we have a lot of water.  Janine, I would give a heads up to your guests to pack some Off/bug spray for the early evenings, early mornings as there may be some mosquitos/no see um's due to the water (I am not talking about swarms, we just normally don't have them at all and if someone is sensitive to them, it's cheaper to bring bug spray vs buying it here).  I'll keep you posted.  I am supposed to fly to Virginia on Sunday for 3 days to see my mom, so fingers crossed the flights will all be good!

No worries here.  Most of us are worried about those in Haiti (we all have friends/co workers here who are from Haiti who have family there).  They really do not need this.

Hi Krys, thanks for the update and Misti thanks for that posting. We have had downpours all day. Areas like South Beach are flooded and the rains are expected to continue. It was raining so hard in front of me that I couldn't even see the car in front of me while driving home today. Krys you are so right, Haiti does not need this. Tonight on the news they showed all these people living in make shift tents and huts and I was in tears. I really am praying that it doesn't cause any tragedies. My friend from St. Lucia has been chronicalling (sp) the damage on her blog that it caused there.....so sad.
