Thank You card etiquette

Our wedding isn't for another month but we have already received several gifts from our registry from people who will be attending the wedding. Should I send out thank you cards now or wait until after the wedding to send them out?

 We sent them out right away so it was acknowledged that their gift was received and we are sending another thank you to thank them for their attendance.  Otherwise I was afraid they would wonder if we ever recieved the gift.  Also we got several checks before, and while it felt greedy cashing them right away, I didn't want them to have to wait 1-2 months to balance their check book.
