Mexico Danger-wedding cancelation PLEASE HELP

I know a lot of people have already replied, but I wanted to throw in my support too.  Please don´t cancel a wedding in the Riviera Maya area because of what is happening so far away in the border towns.  I have traveld to Playa del Carmen and Cancun frequently and have never encountered a problem.  In fact I am sitting in Playa del Carmen right now as I write this.  It is a beautiful day here, and everything is fine!   I feel so safe in this part of Mexico that I moved to Merida, a city about 4 hours west of Cancun a couple months ago, and am planning my wedding for next November in Playa del Carmen. 

 

I hope you are able to convince your family and friends to educate themselves about the facts of the situation here, and that you are able to have the wedding of your dreams!  Good luck!!

I live in PLaya and go often to Cancun and Merida, I have never seen a single violence sign in the area, and I am always her and there walking around with my wife and kids, 15 american-canada wedding in November is not enough to be sure that nothing is really happen? I went 2 times to new york city this year and saw people fighting, not in Cancun,PLaya or Merida, I know what kind of violence we are talking about but this is s simple sample that if any one come down here will be as much safe as we are.

 

news podcasts shows mostly if not only news that sells, and million americans and Canadian people flight to Mexico, so this is a great opportunity to rise their sales in a not good moment for the economy in USA where now is getting stable.

 

and old say says, believe just 50% of what you hear, always and investigate little more from trusty sources, If I were you, i would ask americans living in Mexico, there is million of them.

I am getting married at Moon Palace in August 2011. I have had a few guests ask about the violence in Mexico and we tell them to read the news. It's the border towns and Mexico City. Everyday there is some sort of violence in every city but like others have said, would you not visit those places bc of the violence. Keep planning away and hopefully your family and friends will realize that they are being ridiculous.

I want to clarify, there is no violence in Mexico City, all my family lives there and nothing is as complicated as what is going on in the Mexico north borders

I am currently in your situation regarding wedding guests cancelling due to this circumstance. In all fairness, I can see them being scared to travel, as I am.... but to cause stress amoungst the bride n groom; who should be getting nothing but excitement from their guests on all travelling to a destination to share this intimate ceremony... thats just not right.

My mother in law mentioned to us that we should re-schedule our wedding as well. We have been engaged for 2.5 years, and we have gone through thick n thin to plan a trip for over 40ppl.... there is NO WAY Im backing out now. I have spent alot of time arranging this destination wedding, not to start from scratch. I live in Toronto Canada.... you dont think there is crime, drugs, or mobs here... ??? Then you aint living in the real world. Things are going to happen here, in the States, in Mexico, in Cuba, in Jamacia or the DR..... things happen, and the media blows everything out of the water.......

Like my Fiance said 'think of it as lightening, it will only hit there once! Now its free'sailing.....' haha, I try to think that way.

We have 73 days until our wedding in Feb/2011... Im just hoping that it will be up and running before then.

 

The funny part is; my entire guest list booked on the Sunset side... the only person really screwed is my Father in Law because his 'current' wife didnt want to be with the Mother's family....... so they booked on the Rieveria side... LOL... sucks to be them!

 

Lighten up... its your wedding. As long as your groom is by your side, thats all you should care about. He IS your family now..... the only people who will fee regret if your family who chose not to stand with you during your wedding day!

Agirolamo, it would be a shame if some of your guest do not com down here, there is absolutly no violence, but every head has its own world.

Its not so much on the 'violence' but more so on the recent explotion to the resort we're staying at.... Any news on that, or when it will be back up and running....

Today is the final day for payments... we were at 46 ppl, and now down to 26!!! Huge bailout.

Whoever does not make it.... its all on them! I know I will be swimming in ocean waters, sipping tequilla, and partying all night long!

 

Thanks for the heads up though.. its nice to hear that its 'normal' down south!

I was planning on posting the latest warnings from the US gov on our website to cut down on the panic and calls to me.  I also looked for a map so I could point out the dangerous areas and show how far away Tulum is from it all.

 

You know what I discovered?

 

As a Dallas girl, I'm soooo much closer to the violence than Tulum.  If THAT doesnt put all of my fellow Dallas family and friends worries to rest I dont know what will!

Just returned from a week in Cancun.  We felt very safe.  The hotel areas have lots of security.  We walked to shopping malls, bars, etc & took the public buses without hesitation.  I wouldn't hesitate to return.  I am not aware of much (if any) random tourist attacks.  Most of the violence is in border towns and has to do with those involved in drug dealings.  It is a shame that people are freaking out over visiting Mexico
