Photoshop invite help me!

So I now have this idea to do our invites with a washed out oak tree covering the back of the standard invite with our initals ingraved in the tree. I am trying to so this with Photoshop but it still looks like I wrote on a tree with a pen. Can someone help me?

 

I am using the burn tool...is there a better one to use? I have limited experience with it so talk down to me.

that sounds like such a neat idea; but I don't have a clue how to do it!!! my photoshop skills are very elementary!!!

I found a few sites that might help... but who knows! I'm new to the land of Photoshop.
