Great info ladies!!! I sent my save the dates out 11 months before wedding.  I also got them on vistaprint, and downloaded a template.  They were such a hit!  My total cost for 100 was like $35.  I would think two sets of invites would be way more expensive... just a thought!

We sent out STDs two years before our wedding date, simply because we are getting married in Australia, which will be quite expensive for our guests and we wanted to give them time to save up. We have included an RSVP slip with the STDs as we really want some kind of idea of how many guests we'll have, even if people change their minds. Our venue has a minimum number of 50 and a maximum of 120 and we've sent out 140 STDs. We're hoping to have 50 guests. If we don't, we'll be sending out a second round of STDs. We sent them out in August and have given until 1st November to respond. We didn't provide a stamp, but we did provide a self addressed envelope. What's annoying me is that some people have already told us yes or no verbally, but haven't bothered to return the RSVP slip.

We'll then be sending full invitations, to include travel details around 6 months before the wedding date.

We did pretty much the same thing. We are a younger couple and got engaged in April 2010, planning on getting married in January 2012. We sent out our STD's and created a website in August 2010 to give our guests a rough estimate of how much they will need to save.

We are currently working with a TA to get our requests in and to book our group rates/flights. My TA said that we have around 30 days from the estimate to get deposits in to book the spot, this seems very rushed to me but I trust she knows what she's talking about. So I am also working with my invitation girl to get all the invites made up to send out immediately once everything is booked (this will likely end up being 10-11 months beforehand as well). Everyone will be asked to rsvp on our website a week before the deposits are due so the TA can remind them of their deposits. We will send out a newsletter with travel details etc about 2 months before departure.

Isn't this essentially the same thing as a STD and an invite?

I am against the "save the date" cards - it is an additional cost and once we have the date and location we are going to order and send out the invites as soon as possible. We are shooting for next March/April and should have things set in the next week or so. We are hoping to have invites out by the start of October - how long do you give people to RSVP? 2 months? That would give us enough time to do a second round of invites (if we need to) since we would know by December who will be able to make it or not from Round 1. There are several aunts/uncles that I am pretty sure won't be able to come, if we know they aren't coming, why not invite some friends who we couldn't put in Round 1 because of family?

Once we have the final list, I am planning on putting together a more detailed info packet (things to do, places to see) along with either a luggage tag or passport holder for each guest to mail out a month or so before the trip.

Has anyone else done this?? Am I crazy?

We're getting married in Jan 2012.   I got the free Vistaprint postcards and send them out with my Christmas cards to the close people and family that I normally send Christmas cards to.

I'm working on getting my invitations out within the next month or two, and had people RSVP by summertime.  That gives them time to think, and still leaves me lots of time to plan things.  I'm anticipating having to make calls/email reminders.

Seems like sending out two rounds of invitations may be more trouble than its worth, at least a small save the date reminder really wasn't any cost or much work.  Plus people seemed to really like them!

I want to send my STD at least a year in advance. Then like 8/9 months I'll send out the invitation with all the information. I'm going on my site visit in less than two weeks and hope to have a date when I return :) most likely wanting to do Memorial Day weekend but I guess we'll see!
