To Facebook or not to Facebook...

Recommended Posts

I made a point to wait until we told those that are close to us and felt that they should hear it from us. It was a couple weeks before I made the status change. My FI is not on facebook but I have a couple of his friends on mine and I was bugging him to get a hold of them before I changed it. But regardless you got engaged and people should be happy for you no matter how they found out

Yep -- I'm with Manders 100%!

Try to make sure those near-and-dear to you hear it from you first before they hear it in ANY other capacity, facebook or otherwise! wink.gif

I'm not connected to many family members on Facebook so I didn't have that kind of drama.

I took a picture of my ring with my phone and texted it to a bunch of my friends first, and then called the people that didn't text. My parents were actually out of the country and didn't find out till the next day.

Same here. My parents were out of the country (Ironically in Cabo San Lucas) and I sent my mom a picture mail of my ring. She freaked out via text msg. It was pretty funny. She was upset because my dad told her not to call from her cell phone.

Facebook status was changed IMMEDIATELY :) My FI had already told my whole family before we went away for the weekend (my mom had gone with him to get my ring made)...they all got the phone call as soon as the status was changed and for the rest of the night I got to text and check Facebook messages of congratulations...

I don't see how anyone could be upset at HOW they find out...it's fabulous news..who cares who tell who when?

What if you called someone and they didn't answer..are you then allowed to change your status or do you have to wait until you talk to everyone?

It's YOUR news..tell it however YOU want to :)

That was my first thought too... let as many people know as possible by changing my FB status - but I made myself wait a few days so I could tell my close family and friends in person first.

The day after we got engaged I sent my mom an email, then FI changed our relationship status.  We didn't think it was a big deal, we've been common-law for years and had originally thought it'd be a small simple wedding anyway.  But we did have some friends who were offended we didn't tell them personally.

We waited until we had told the closest family (and a couple of friends). None of our friends were offended to find out through facebook, most of my close friends live in my home country in Europe anyway so that is how we all keep up with each other.
