To Facebook or not to Facebook...

Recommended Posts

I wasn't on facebook until after my wedding, but I would've waited until the important people knew. However, the important people would be our parents, siblings and best freiends. I wouldn't have called extended family like aunts and uncles. If I had a living grandparent I probably would've told them, but not really sure.

We got engaged in Turkey and was dying to tell everyone but we agreed to wait and tell our family face to face, so the day we got back we spent going around all our close family and friends filling them in.

Once we did this I put it on Facebook! Lots of cousins and extended family on there who were fine with finding out like that!

We waited to tell our family and close friends before we posted it. I did make a comment on my status of "this was the best weekend of my life" but did not specify why... After I told my mom and close friends (because really they were the only ones that didn't know, FI had asked my dad and told his family ahead of time), then we changed things on FB.

I think that if I had to find out about something like this from one of my close friends on FB, I would have been disappointed in how it was done and how they couldn't personally tell me.

Well my grandmother and I are not particularly close (she dosen't really like me). So it isn't the end of the world how she found out, I mean, I never got a birthday call from her, she always favoured some of my cousins over my and some of my other cousins (we are her step-son's kids...).

Anyways, so I am not upset! I did however call my parents and told them, and FI called his parents and told them, and then we updated out statuses on FB.

When we got engaged, our parents had just left for week long trips to Aruba and Hawaii and we didn't want to tell them over the phone. We had to keep quiet for a week until we could tell them in person. My friends at work knew, obviously, but I made them swear not to say anything on Facebook until I changed my status to engaged.

I really wanted to see how happy my family was for us and I couldn't imagine having anyone find out via Facebook. But, that said...to each her own!

I do agree with BachataBride though, have you spoken to your grandma about it? It might make her feel better if you share the details directly with her.

first off fb wasnt really a thing when i got engaged. i did announce it on myspace but at the time i really only had friends and aquaintances on there so it was no biggie. even now that im exclusively on fb, i still only have a few family members.

2nd tho, all of dougs family was with us when we got engaged so no worries would have been there! and my moms side of the family is sort of computer illiterate so haha, no one rally would have known. wink.gif

I made sure that I told all close family and friends first. I think I even waited weeks, maybe even a month just in case there were a few more people that I had to get to. As much as I love technology, that's one of the downfalls.... its less personal.
