Hey Rae,

When most of our grandparents were young everyone married at 18/19/20 and are still together 40+ years later! I guess alot of people think that people that marry young dont stay together for very long but doesnt mean you'll be the same!

I am 23 and will be when I get married. We have been together for 7 years and so far i've only had strangers comment its too young to get married but hey, I'm happy cant imagine my life with anyone else so I don't worry about it and it shouldn't worry you either! xxx

Age has less to do with it than the commitment and time it takes to maintain and grow a healthy marriage.  If someone is not dedicated to the marriage it won't be successful, no matter their age.  With that being said, the reason people may say something about your ages is that often at the age of 18 people are much more selfish and less likely to compromise their own wants and wishes for another person.  If you are both committed to growing together, and giving to one another, you will be successful, no matter what age you get married.  We've only been married a year and half, but my husband and I are celebrating our 11 year anniversary of our first date tonight, and are happier today than we have ever been.  We have been through alot since we were 16, and I have no regrets waiting until I was 26 to get married.  If the decision is the right one for you and your fiancee, and you are both committed to the marriage, I wish you both a life happiness!

At 22 FI and I decided we didn't care about marriage and wanted to start a family, so at 23 we had our daughter.  A lot of people could not understand that it was a planned pregnancy because we were unmarried (gasp!), but it was worse because we look so young - when we bought our first house my neighbour asked if i'd be going to the new highschool.  So I've definitely felt the judgement you're getting!  Age is no guarantee that people are mature or that a marriage will work, so ignore what the jerks are saying!

I haven't had that much hassle to be honest, though I think some of my friends might freak out at me (ours is a complicated situation so they don't know yet). I'll be 21, nearly 22, and he'll be 23 when we get married. I know I am a totally different person to even who *I* was at 18, over the past couple of years I have grown up SO much, but that is honestly due to my wonderful fiance. He's helped me get over myself, and WANT to stop being such a selfish child. And my goodness, it feels great :) I think it helps that my Mum was married at 20 and had me at 21, and his Mom was married at 19 with a baby at 20 (I think), so they "get it". I absolutely know for sure I'm doing the right thing, and I've never been so happy, or so excited :) So stuff 'em :P

About the baby thing though, I have siblings a looot younger than me, and there are some judgemental people in the world! I look young anyway, so pushing my 2 year old brother around when I was 15 got me some dirty looks. The weirdest one was when me and my fiance were carrying my 18month old sister through a cafe a few months ago, and eeeeveryone stopped...and stared at us...It's probably because she's adopted from Ethiopia so we made a funny looking family (2 white adults, 1 black baby), but I don't know WHAT they thought, but it was so RUDE!

My FI and I are both 22. Even I think we are really young to be doing this but when its right, its right!! we have been together since we were freshmen in high school, went to college together, moved to a whole new city together and are making a beautiful life for ourselves! The most important thing about getting married or having long term relationships when you are young is that you have to be willing and able to grow together. I don't know who I would be without John, but it doesn't matter so much because I completely love the person I am with him.

And something i have noticed regarding relationships- age does not even slightly correlate to maturity!!!
