Annoying brother in law

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm starting to panic. Neither my FI, myself nor our friends can endure my FI's brother. I can barely stand him over Xmas dinner, let alone a week in Jamaica! He originally said he wasn't coming because his wife couldn't get the time off. Now he's pushing the MIL to hound me to give him the details to our wedding (I hadn't done this previously as he informed he would nto be attending). It's hard to tell the MIL that her son is the most annoying person on the face of the earth! Plus he got married last year and although we were invited, were other "shunned" from this wedding. My FI wasn't included in any pics. What do I do? How do I handle this?

OMG!! Something else to worry about. Really sounds like this something your FI is going to have to deal with it. Can he? You really can't do anything about it....you are only going to make yourself crazy w/ worry about it.

I have a similar situation with my FI's brother. He gets really argumentative, beligerant and targets people when he's drinking (we are going AI). There have been several incidents over the past couple years that I have just had to get over because of FI. FI swears he will have a long talk with him before the wedding. These "talks" have helped (short lived) in the past.

OMG, you've described my brother in law! If we were getting married locally, I would be fine for an evening. But an AI is a whole week!! I don't want to dread my own wedding. I'm hoping my FI will have a chat with him and/or his mom to straighten things out. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I've got an aunt kind of like this, she gets SUPER obnoxious when she drinks. Like cries and gets mean, just ridiculous. At first she told me that she wouldn't be able to take the time off work to come to my wedding, and secretly, as much as I do love her, I was glad to hear this. I mean, we are going to an AI where she can drink her face off for free all day long! But just recently all her kids have decided to go so now suddenly she and her husband have decided to come too - just great! Anyways, I'm sure it will be fine, but I am a bit worried... I expressed my concerns to my brother who told me that he would be happy to run interference and make sure she doesn't ruin any of our time there. I feel bad that he has to do this, but he told me that really it's not fair if I have to be watching out for her on my wedding trip. If we are all hanging out at a certain bar or restaurant and she is acting ridiculous, she should be the one to go elsewhere, not us. I wonder if you have anyone that could help you "run interference" with your brother in law?

We definitely have a few other "annoying" guests coming as well, but we're just trying to take it in stride and realize that these are a small minority compared to all the great people that will be there! I think it helps too that, annoying are not, these people are travelling a long distance and forking out for this vacation to come to our wedding, which is so sweet! So we will try and cut them a little slack as much as possible, and just try and all enjoy our time together celebrating :)

I sooo feel for you because I too have an annoying future brother-in-law!! Mine too wasn't supposed to come but he booked last minute and is coming...yay. Oh yes, he's also bringing his gf that is also crazy and annoying. Everyone thinks he's annoying and we just ignore him since he thrives on negative attention.

Our plan is to greet them with a smile and then leave them the hell alone for as long as possible! Thankfully my future father-in-law does not find his son's antics amusing and has promised to keep him check on the wedding day. Maybe you can just seat him as far away as possible....or ply him with drinks to the point he can't leave his room (that's my plan!) Good luck!!

I have to agree with some of the ladies perhaps this is something that you FI should handle since this is his brother. Is there anyone that you can entrust to keep him in check? Then at the reception seat him as far away from you as possible and make sure you WC knows how you feel. Good luck!
