Airfare group discounts, how do you get this?

Recommended Posts

Hey destination brides, I was wondering if someone could tell me how you go about trying to get like a group discount rate for airlines? I wonder if you have to have so many people flying from one location to get the discount or if you could just set something up so that no matter where people are flying from if they use certain airlines they can get like a 5% discount or something.

Thanks,

It depends on the airline. I would on their websites and email them all for info.

American Airlines gave me a 5% discount code and you just give it to people for when they book.

Some of the others want 10 people on the same exact flight.

Some want 10 people to fly during a certain period..

I forgot which ones are which...

I received a 5% discount from Continental Airlines. I looked online to see what was the cheapest airline at the time from the cities that most of my guests were departing from. Then I just called customer service and they sent me to their groups department. I told them I was having a destination wedding and wanted to inquire about a discount. They sent me a form to sign and fax back. Then they sent me the discount code and gave me a 12 day span to use the 5% discount and I had to have a minimum of 10 guests use it. It was based on the destination of Cabo so they could leave from anywhere. Some airlines I think need you to leave and return the same time/day. Hope that helps.

American is pretty easy with the 5%.

I also used Frontier which requires that you sign a contract that says 20 people will buy tix with them. But, they give you the code up front and admitted that there's not much they can do if you don't get to 20. It's a 10% discount.

All this is great to know! I'm going to check with US Airways and see what we can do! I contacted the charter airlines -- Spirit and USA3000 -- but their group rates were WAY higher than the regular rates ... and they offered no leeway. Minium 10 people on exact same flight. So, hopefully the larger carriers will give us better options to Punta Cana!

I contacted West Jet and they said if 20 people were booking with them then I could get a discount code and it would be for 10%. The people travelling needed to be coming within a 7 day span of the wedding date. I think most airlines would offer "something" for a big group travelling..
