Sand bottle? What is this tradition?

I am sure it has been discussed on this forum but I cant locate a thread. Maybe I just don't know the proper name for this "tradition". So I need assistance.

 

Why is sand collected as a keepsake of your wedding? What is the tradition? When is it done? Is there a point in the ceremony when this is done? Is the sand blessed by the priest/pastor?

 

I'm clueless please help...
