I've been getting No-chip Gel manicures for a few months now and they always last me 2-3 weeks.  I mostly pick the OPI colors and My place charges $30.  I go every two weeks because I don't like when you can tell my nails are growing out, not because they have chipped.  I do know that a lot depends on the person doing your nails.  It took me a few tries before I found someone that can do them really good.  Other nail techs don't apply it as well and that's when it starts peeling.

I do a lot with my hands, a lot of cleaning, crafts, typing etc and my nails still look great.

An added benefit is that the gel polish does help keep the nails from breaking.  It's been a LONG time since I've broken a nail!

It's awesome!

Do NOT get gel manicures if you will be spending a great deal of time in the ocean. I got them last December before a scuba diving trip. By the time we returned home, the color was lifting off of most of the nails, taking part of the nail surface with it. It took months for my nails to recover. This experience combined with not being able to do my own touch ups has led me back to regular nail polish.

PS I had gotten the gel polish once before the scuba trip and it was ok.

I've experienced gel nail polish which is absolutely fabulous for long wear at home, I was thinking about doing it again for our wedding.  My only issue is that it causes my strong nails to become super weak, my nails won't grow for 3 months after, they just break constantly sad.gif.  Anyone else had this problem?

I just tried gel for the first time and while it really doesn't chip, I am starting to get annoyed that you can see the growth at the top and the fact that I have to go back to the salon to get it removed. With regular polish once it chips or grows out I just remove it at home until I have time to go back and get them done again. Since I haven't had it removed yet I can't say if it's done any damage to my nails. Time will tell I guess!

Soak off gel nails are different from traditional gel nails. Soak off gel nails can be removed by soaking nails in acetone and the gel peels off, while traditional gel nails must be grind down to the natural nail (thus usually causing damage to it).

I used to pay for soak off gel nails (some times up to $80 each time, but they last for a month). However, with new gel polishes that they sell t the general public, I have been painting it myself.

The start up cost is a little higher since you have to buy the LED light and then the gel polishes.

Every time I paint my nails, they last at least 2 weeks. I am really rough with my nails...I go rockclimbing, kayaking, fishing...everything with my manicure and it doesn't chip.

The secret is to make sure the gel is cured around the tip of each nail to seal the polish so that it won't peel as easily.
