I'm pretty much doing the low-carb thing 100% now, but mostly for medical reason. If I ingest gluten, I break out head to toe in blisters. Since gluten is in the majority of processed foods, I've had to give up breads, pasta, dairy, condiments, etc... On top of that, I had given up sugar also---- so for the most part, I'm limited to meat (and we switched to seafood, turkey, chicken, with the occasional beef), veggies and berries....

But boy, talk about some weight loss! Damn, in the first 6 weeks of the diet, I lost about 35 pounds! After awhile, my body got used to the dietary changes and now I feel better than I have in years! I don't have low energy, I went from sleeping 8-9 hours per night down to about 5-6, I'm more alert mentally, my memory has improved, and my digestive system feels better than it ever has in my life!
I was getting close to the 2 week mark, and just couldn't take it anymore...

Mikki, what do you typically eat for breakfast? I find when I do lo carb I tend to eat too much cheese mostly because its a quick snack and its easy for breakfast when I can't cook, but you know what happens when you eat too much cheese and no longer have enough fiber in your diet (it happens everytime I do lo carb) but I really like doing it because I'm so much less hungry and have more energy. I'm going to continue with my diet I'm on right now for one more week and if I'm not losing enough I'm doing lo carb, I've only got about 2 months until my wedding, yikes!

I usually get really bad headaches too, but they do go away, but I know they are excruciating to deal with, nothing usually helps!

I've never been much of a breakfast person, even when I was a kid. But when I do get hunger pains, I usually grab a couple slices of bacon (one of my fat-saturated weaknesses) or I drink a big glass of water, then wait about 10 minutes and eat some nuts, or 2-3 strawberries----- just something to get some solid food in my stomach momentarily to get the hunger pains/stomach growls to end...

Before the gluten/blister thing, I really liked the cinnamon bun bars from Atkins for breakfast. And the chocolate cream pie/boston cream pie low-carb protein bars from EAS had gotten really good---- none of that nasty whey or protein after-taste... But now I skip those too...

I wish I could skip breakfast, but I'm usually hungry not long after I get up and I get really nauseous when I don't eat. But maybe after a few days of adjusting to eating less in the morning I might feel better.

I actually love the protein bars from EAS, I love the choc. pb one, but the last time I did lo carb I think I was eating a string cheese for breakfast, a protein bar for lunch, and then salad with chicken or something for dinner and I felt like the protein bar was hindering my weight loss, but that could have been the cheese doing that too!

Thanks for the tips!

BTW, when did you start having the gluten problem? Was that when you kept getting the rash?

Yep--- it took about 4 months for them to rule out a couple different things in the tests they did, but they finally made the diagnosis (dermatitis herpetiformus) at the beginning of June. It sucks, but at least it's not Sweets Syndrome (kind of like the 'red flag' for leukemia and lymphoma), which is one of the things they picked up on in my CBC.

I am back to eating low carb too. I am not cutting out all of them, but I am just trying to limit to about 40g a day. I am doing eggs or egg whites for breakfast, salad with chicken or salmon for lunch, and some kind of protein and veggie for dinner. Snacks are low fat string cheese and sugar-free popsicles. And lots of coffee with splenda!!!

There are some very good ideas on about.com for low carb snacks and meals.
