You run the risk of it not arriving to people that you want it to get to.

 

It is also a nice "Welcome" Gift when your guests arrive. Especially if they aren't expecting it

I don't think it's strange to send out before hand. Most guests aren't expecting something so if they get it before arriving, they aren't going to think "why didn't she give me this there?"

 

That said, I'll be lugging my stuff down there because I want to give them to the guests down there.
