Trash the dress - need help!

Recommended Posts

We will be doing a trash the dress shoot at the beach. FH is concerned about permanently damaging my gown (made of silk satin). Does anyone know if the sand and salt water will damage the gown? Any comments or thoughts are greatly appriciated!!! Thanks smile124.gif

Most silks will shrink and loose their texture (become rough) when exposed to any water, let alone salt water. I think it's a safe bet that your dress would be ruined... but isnt that the point?? :P
yes, you are absolutly correct! I tried that argument with him, but he doesn't want me to ruin my gown, especially after the money we paid for it. I don't have a reason to keep it in perfect condition...hmmm, this might be tough. He said I should get another gown for the TTD, but I want the pics to look like we took them on the actual wedding day. Thanks for the info about the fabric!

My FI felt the same way. I ended up buying a second dress. I want to keep my dress after the wedding so I really didn't want to trash it either. I ended up getting a cheaper dress to trash from Nordstrom's wedding shop, several other brides are doing the same thing (buying a second dress to trash). If you check out the thread "Post your knock off dress" you'll find alot of ladies how posted pics of both their ceremony dress and their second TTD.

Go for it! if it's a tradition that you must keep your gown, or if it was really darn expensive and you want to resell, I say get a second dress! You CAN NOT be stressed or worried about such a carefree, fun photo shoot, so buy an inexpensive, or used dress, I know I wish I had for my second, third, or fourth gown (i obviously had issues!)

It will be so wonderful, and fun, so my advice is to also get something that won't be so cumbersome when wearing it while wet, not sure what you currently have!

I've never quite understood the whole TTD thing...just points to yet another way that the industry (photographers & dress designers/retailers) are out to make money. Spend $$$$ on a dress and then trash it?! But that's just me. I will admit though that the pics I've seen have been very nice so I'd say if you wanna have fun with it then just get a knock off that looks very similar to your wedding gown. Check the knock off gown thread and definitely scour ebay!

really?? I dont understand why anyone would buy a second dress. If you are trashing your dress then trash it. so what if you spent a crazy amount of money on it....you still NEVER going to wear it again, so you either trash it and enjoy the full experience or you waste more money on yet another dress and then hang your super expensive in your closet to collect dust and do nothing....

mlabbe is right, there are existing threads that talk about this a lot so make sure you do a search when you're looking for answers. I recommend that you go through and read them. My own experience - my dress was satin. It was dirty as hell so I put it in my front loading washing machine. It came out fine! A few spots on it that came out with some stain remover. I actually sold it to a fellow BDW B2B after that.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it after. I figured, what the hell, I'm never going to wear it again. I get more out of my amazing pics than a dress just hanging in my closet, but to each their own.
