It does have a smell, but it isn't as bad as some others that I've used in the past. I actually give it time to dry and then use some body mist so that you can't tell.

I tan pretty well but have a problem with peeling - so a little tip for anyone the same is to prepare your skin. I went to Turkey last year and had a traditional Turkish bath, which included an exfoliating massage, as a result I had the best tan and didn't peel at all!

I have 20% off the spa in my hotel and plan to book myself in for the first day!

We were just down in Turks (where Krys is) and I am a redhead with very fair skin...we used spf 70 or 80 religiously (every 2-3 hours) plus I really limited my time in the sun between 12-3 by sitting in the shade or under umbrellas, etc. I got a little pink on my legs but no burns & I undertand sun poisoning, had it many times so I was so happy not to get burnt too bad. I used Neutrogena sport face & a neutrogena spray waterproof suntan lotion.

I wanted to share a website I recently found. It's the Environmental Working Group, EWG's 2010 Sunscreen Guide and it rates sunscreens. I was shocked to find out that my normal sunscreen has a "caution" rating.

 

It appears that the highest rated brands can be ordered online, but Whole Foods should carry the Jason brand, which scored well.

Thanks for sharing the link and great thread for us fair skinned, red-haired, freckled people!!

Anyone else constantly get comments that they are going to get burned down south and it won't be fun for us to hang out in the shade? I "love" how everyone gives me their opinion!!

The Blue Lizzard stuff is great, and I really like the sunblocks that are sweat and waterproof as they work the best on me. I've found that the is not only frequent applications, but also wearing a cover-up on the beach and a hat. Just wearing a little bit of clothing helps keep a lot of sun off of you. I have a few cover-ups that I wore in Mexico and I still wear while we're at the lake and they really work! It doesn't have to be heavy clothing, just something light.

If your ceremony is going to be in the sun, have you thought about using a parasol? This might help you out a little bit. When you're enjoying the rest of your trip, I'd suggest cozying up under a a big beach umbrella and investing in a big chic floppy hat, like this...

I think covering up and reapplying the SPF are key. I'm super fair skinned too.

First off I am a firm believer in long sleeve sun shirts/rash guards for intense sun hours (10-4). I love land's end for their kids and women's sun shirts (we have loads of them...lots of colors and very high quality! Best around.

For Sunscreen, the best for my youngest hands down is an Austrailian creme (can be bought in the US) called Blue Lizard. It's a micronized Zinc Oxide. It's the White stuff of years past except it has been developed to go sheer once rubbed in. UVA and UVB protective and is a barrier creme (it doesn't get absorbed in skin)vs most sunscreens which are absorbed (it's great and safe for babies and children). It's waterproof etc. I was out on Sunday in full sun from 8-2pm in high intense sun (I am fair and blonde) and am not burned in the least.

The other creme I have had success with (but I find I have to be more diligent with reapplying for myself) is Neutregena with helioplex recommended as well by a dermatologist. The creme is a bit lighter weight and I like that for me if we're going out and about as it's not as heavy, but for water/swim/kayaking/hard core beach time, I go with the blue lizard. Kids don't get a choice, blue lizard it is.

I additionally buy (you can usually find in supermarket/drugstore) RIT clothing SPF enhance. RIT makes clothing dye you throw into your wash. A while back they created this SPF that you add to your wash of clothes and it adds SPF protection to your clothes up to 40 washes.

Hope that helps, I would pick up some of both and see which you like. Remember you need to use a shot glass full of sunscreen per application (I go through a bottle at least for my girls per week if we're out and about). And reapplying is really important!!!
