Mexico Wedding - Legal ceremony in Canada before going to Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My fiance and I are getting married in Mexico but are really getting legally married in Canada before going out to Mexico. I told my mother about this and she is totally against it as she thinks we are cheating our guests. Is there any info. on the web that I get send her. Info. that says most people doing destination weddings these days are going this route as it eliminates alot of running around and headaches.

Thanks in advance

Get her to sign up on here - there are a few threads on here - just for that. Or bring her over one day and show her the thread.

We are doing the same thing. However we arent telling anyone, not even the parents.

It would cost us so much more just to get legally married down there.

First we have to send our paper work down and pay to get it translated - then you have to get blood work done in mexico and you have to be there 4 legal days prior to your wedding. Which costs $300 for the blood work. Then you have to get your marriage licence when it gets mailed back to you - translated into english. Im not willing to pay over $600 for all of that and the hassle.

No thanks! I hope your mom can see the reason why you want to do this - in the end....its your day you do what you want - not what your family wants. Unless she is willing to pay for all the extras - I would go ahead with your plans

GOOD LUCK!

My husband and I got legally married in Chicago before we we had our destination wedding in Mexico.

My husband's parents think we should celebrate the day we signed papers at the court house as our anniversary. But we don't! We are celebrating our 1 year anniversary on May 1st when we said our vows in front of our friends and family on the beach in Mexico. The courthouse thing took 2 minutes and it was only the legal part.

We've heard horror stories from people we know who did the legal part in Mexico or the islands and they ended up waiting 6 months to get their marriage certificates mailed to them. Plus, you have to get bloodwork done and who wants to be stuck with a needle a few days before their wedding!? Not me!!

Just keep sticking to your guns with the parents. It will all work out for the best. I don't have any websites or links to any supporting documentation, but it has to be out there somewhere.

Good luck!!

I'm definitely getting married in Canada before I go down for my Mexico wedding. I've told a lot of people I'm doing it this way, and they seem fine with it but I definitely downplay the importance of the legal stuff. I really do feel like the REAL wedding will be in my wedding dress, in Mexico, in front of family and friends. It is the day I will celebrate our anniversary and the one I will really remember and cherish. How can my guest be being cheated if that's how I feel??

i just got married legally in mexico last week...it was simple and not that much more money than doing the legal ceremony here. i priced them both out for our resort and the difference was about $200. cheaper to me...than asking everyone to pay $1000-1500pp to come.

I'm getting married legally at home before we leave too. Only my mom knows and we aren't planning on sharing this info with anyone else. I view our legal ceremony as paperwork and will not celebrate it as our wedding date. We are no exchanging rings and I will probably wear shorts and flip flops. I think if you view your ceremony in Mexico as your wedding then that's what it is...your mom is going to have to deal or maybe she can pay the extra $ for you to get married in Mexico. Good luck with your decision!

I am getting legally married a few days before. My FMIL wasn't too happy with the idea and if she still isn't happy about it-we won't tell her we did it. It is just so much easier to do this and we will celebrate the day of our symbolic ceremony.

You know that in France it's actually compulsory to get married legally before doing anything religious ? You cannot - I repeat cannot - get married in Church or other if you're not married in front of the Mayor first. Traditionnally, not a lot of people get invited to the civil ceremony - the big thing is of course the religious and the reception is after Church, not after Townhall... so... not so "cheating" in other parts of the world ! wink.gif

We actually got married in Houston legally before going to the Riviera Maya. In my case, getting married in Mexico meant headache for transcription in France (for me) AND headache for transcription in the USA (for DH). I chose to go with only one headache (getting legally married in Houston I still had to do the necessary for the transcription in France).

Our Mexican wedding was still perfect and my mom said it was the best wedding she ever went to (and I'm not an only child), even though she knew I was already married legally and was not attending that one. And DH cried when he saw me coming down the aisle. That makes it the most real of all.

we will be getting all the legal stuff done in town before heading down to Mexico. My FI recently changed his last name from his mom's to his dad's so we didn't want to have to deal with all the paperwork.

we're not telling people. we told 2 friends and they said "so we're going to your fake wedding in Mexico"...so we decided to keep quiet about it instead, including parents.

it's really up to you, as long as you're happy with your decision, and maybe this thread will also help. http://bestdestinationwedding.com/fo...wedding-52156/

good luck!
