Exactly. And if you don't want to spend $$ on invitations, I really like the "newsletter" idea. Those are easy to make yourself and send to the guests.

We didn't do std or invites and we have no regrets. We got engaged in October '09, decided where we were getting married in Dec '09, and got married in April '10, so it was pretty fast. We sent out a mass email to people that explained what were doing and it contained all the information necessary to make reservations and to rsvp. It worked out well for us.

I wouldn't do the invites if you already sent out a std with info on how to make reservations and rsvp.

thanks for all these posts - this has been my main stress at this stage - always knew I would do STD electonically and a website - the formal invites was the question - I was afraid I was doing a big NO by opting not too.... guess I was wrong! But will be sure to put the right info in the STD and if I feel like teh website isn't getting viewed - then perhaps a reminder email/evite or newsletter- just not going to stress about it!

We sent out an e-Save the date from our wedding website. This announced our date and the website. We've already had 21 book with no invitations. I've decided not to do invitations for the wedding. Instead, I'm going to do a formal announcement & invitation to our AHR.

I don't plan on doing invites either. I sent out STD magnets along with a full color brochure (thanks Vistaprint - FREE!) and a FAQ sheet. I also sent a RSVP card because guests are required to pay a 50% deposit on acommodations by July. We have a website set up and I plan on sending guests info on flight sales, updates etc! So I was thinking that since the wedding is in April, I'll send a pre-travel brochure, a JA Tourist board brochure, and a "Things to Do" sheet out to confirmed guests in February. But I really like the sound of a newsletter instead...and I have some great templates on my Mac. Hmmm...

It is soooo confusing to know what to do! I have stressed over the Save the Date/Invite dilemma for months now! We have just finished our Save the Dates and are getting ready to send them out (slightly under a year until the wedding). We've decided to send out invitations, which will likely be in September or October, as our guests have to book by November for the "early bird" rate. It's pretty early, but if it can save people a few bucks, I figure it's worth it. I think we'll do some sort of RSVP to our website at that point. I don't see the point of sending out RSVP cards in addition to the Save the Date and the Invite. Too much paper...

Combining the ideas of a few brides I think I am going to do this:

Send Save the Dates (luggage tags)directing everyone to my website with Unofficial pricing, accommodations, etc with a Pre-RSVP (post card) so I can plan OOTs, dinner, tables, centerpieces, extra- we are having the reception down there with no AHR. 1 year out.

Then send a Newletter Titled Our Names Wedding- YOU'RE INVITED! so there isn't confusion...this is your invite. With finalize pricing, down payments due dates, extra...(all this information will come from my website. But what it seems is people either don't go on the website or don't get serious until they get a paper invite. I will send this out pretty early too prob 9 months so that guests can space out payments on the trip and we again can finalize details.

I hope this works!

With my group finally booking! (as I've noticed from other brides posts) they've waited till the last minute, most have not RSVP'd formally to the website.

My suggestion, just keep on top of those that haven't RSVP'd - if they've booked with you're TA that's pretty much your RSVP. We have at least a dozen that say they're going but will book last minute or with a different agent so try to stay in touch so you can get your numbers down.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for asking that, I'm still considering. Wow! Can I just say I love you all, I don't think I saw one snarky comment here. I swear I went on the knot and people were just so incredibly blunt with their answers. I guess they weren't technically being mean, but you could feel that sort of tone. I saw both opinions expressed here and not once did I feel like the person who asked was being judged. I love BDW!
