OMG- I can't stop laughing regarding the phone message she left you both!!! That is so funny (probably not so much to you right now), but she seems so crazy!!

I have to admit, now that I have a son i joke around with DH telling him that I'm never going to accept him getting married (which I won't!) and I'm always going to be his #1 girl...! DH just reminds me of how annoyed I get when his mother calls us at 9 pm wanting to have an hour long conversation with him and we want to spend "alone" time , so then I tell myself I could never do that to someone- even if I wanted to (ha ha). Mom's just feel so much for their little boys, but you're right, that can be a total deal breaker. Good thing he stands up to her and makes you a priority because that would cause major problems in a relationship.

Good luck with the future MIL incidents, hopefully you won't have too many more!!

Wow she sounds very selfish, I wish I had some advice but fortunately I'm as close to my FMIL as I am to my own mother. The white dress to the wedding would definitely throw me over the top! Go ahead let her wear black. Just try not to let this woman ruin your day, you will probably never get a long with her but you love her son and even though she lives close by you'll just have to stand your ground, but at least your FI is pretty good about standing up to her on your behalf I think that's something that is rare in these situations.

Makes me very thankful for my sane (and VERY nice) MIL!!

I dont know if I could handle it!
I know! I want to call my FMIL up right now and tell her how awesome and not crazy she is! She's a talented seamstress and she even ran her fabric choices for her dress by me before she started sewing. I think they love me a little bit extra because I'm the one who remembers birthdays and presents.

For those with the Monster-in-Laws, maybe try taking a stand in front of a group of non-biased people next time they're being rude. I wonder if they would just die of embarrassment if you stood up and said loudly, but calmly, "You know... it really hurts my feelings when you say things like that to me. It makes me feel as if you don't want me to be a part of your family and that you don't want your son to be happy."

Of course... it seems like some of these women don't have souls, so they might not feel badly at all if you call them out! I agree with everyone who says that your FI needs to draw a line in the sand. He needs to be firm that you are to be treated with respect and any disrespect will NOT be tolerated.
