How much did you carry on?

Recommended Posts

I know we are allowed a carry on and personal item each. My question is I plan on carrying on my suitcase and my tote, my fiancé had a suitcase as well and I wanted him to carry my dress as a personal item? Does anyone know if this would be okay? I really need the extra carry on space and don't want to pay extra to check another bag.

Any ideas?

I really think it depends on the airline. Some of them actually consider your dress a "carry on" luggage and therefore, you'd only be able to carry that and your purse.

I'd definitely check with your airline as I would hate to see you get stuck with unnecessary fees.

We got married in May 2009 and flew to Cancun on American. I carried on a backpack and a carryon size luggage. My husband carried on a carryon size luggage AND a garment bag that had my dress and his suit in it.

My MIL works for the airlines and she said to just carry my dress on. Don't call ahead or anything, just do it. So, that's what we did and it worked out perfectly. She said to say to the flight attendant is, "We're getting married and this is my wedding dress, can we hang it in the first class closet?" Well, we didn't even have to ask the flight attendants...they saw us carrying it and asked us if we needed to hang it up and we said, "YES, thank you! We are getting married and this is my wedding dress!" They were very nice about it.

A lot of airlines don't consider a dress an extra carry on, but call and check. Also make sure to ask about luggage both ways as different countries have different rules. I carried on my rolling bag, a duffel bag and my dress w/ DH's suit in it. DH carried on a rolling bag and a tri-fold. We checked 4 large suitcases. All of it was free since we flew first class from the US to Mexico. On the way back from Mexico we did not fly first class, had the same amount of luggage and had to pay for 2 checked bags.

I think it all depends on your airline. However I did not call my airline ahead of time. I took my dress and a beach bag that had my purse in it, my DH took his backpack and one of my suitcases. I will say that on the way to Jamaica we had two planes...the first was too small with no first class closet. The second one was a large plane, however I was the fourth bride on the plane...so two out of the four were able to put their dresses in the closets. However, depending on the fabric of your dress it may not really matter. I had mine all folded up and when I got to the hotel, I pulled it out and let it hang for a few days. It was good as new without having to steam it! Good luck!
