Should bridesmaids expect the bride/ groom to pay for their dress?

I did not think that there was a rule set in stone which stated that bride/groom should pay for the bridesmaids dress-what is everyone else doing?

I've been in 3 weddings, and will be in another in October, and only one bride paid for my dress. That was only because it was my aunt's wedding, and I was taking the place of a bridesmaid who dropped out a few weeks before the wedding.

 

My girls are buying their own dresses, but I let them choose their own as long as they're black. I did buy them necklace & earring sets to wear.
