I am not concerned at all. I have been to the Mayan 2 times and nothing has ever happened. I haven't heard anything about violence in the area we are going. I know there are issues at the border with drug cartells but that will not affect any of us. I wouldn't worry about it too much especially since our weddings are so far away. If you stick to staying on the resort or only going to the tourist places with groups and not in the middle of the night then I think everyone will be safe.

The resort is amazing!  The staff is so hospitable, the service timely and the food is pretty good, considering it's an all-inclusive.  My only complaints are that the beach is awfully rocky in some areas and that there can be a really long wait for the restaurants if you don't go early.  That's not enough to stop me from having my wedding there though!

Lisa, what kinds of centerpieces are you doing?

Thanks, Lisa. I just needed some reassurance. The bombing that happened Tuesday in Cancun got me nervous and all reports speculate that drug cartel was involved. I've been reading up on it, and reports do state that it was a bar that was often "frequented by locals" and had a shady reputation (Castillo Del Mar) and the people who were killed were all locals (which does not make it any less tragic, all lives are precious and valuable..I am sad for their families and loved ones; but it may indicate that this is not an area that tourists frequent), so I'm hoping that means that it was one that was not close to the popular resort areas.

I'm not worried about the violence at all, but some of our guests are. Especially since there was a shooting in Cancun a couple of days ago and then a fight got delayed (yesterday?) from Dallas to Cancun because "people" thought the pilot was drunk. The shooting happened in a ghetto part of Cancun and I still don't think it is any more dangerous than a big city in the US...probably less IMHO. I have found a great article on the matter and posted it on our wedding website for our guests to read. Let me know if you want the link to the article! It had a map as well showing how far it is from the border cities to the Riviera Maya, I had to add on there that the violence is actually closer to Texas (where we live) than Riviera Maya ;)

Hi Lisadias! Hi Hanna!

I am so excited that you're ordering your dress today!! Can't wait to start shopping for mine! :)

I think I will go with the brown "tiffany" chairs because my ceremony is going to be on the beach. I just love that picture on the website!

Our wedding isn't until November of next year so I am glad you guys are giving me some suggestions and TONS of ideas! Thanks!

I would love to have the link to that article so I can post it on our website as well. This recent act of violence in Cancun has made some of my guests nervous.

Thanks,

Here is the link to the one I used: http://playazone.wordpress.com/2009/03/01/playa-del-carmen-is-it-safe/  it is from a blog that the resort owners of Luna Blue Hotel write. When looking for it today I saw that they have written much more about it on their blog now and referring to a lot of other articles. I saved the pic of the map and uploaded it as well to our website, I think that for some people it helps to see it on a map.

I didn't even hear that yet. Very sad and closer than I thought! You might wanna check on facebook on the now jade page and ask Diana as she is very good at responding to emails and quite helpful. She may know more information and could provide further reassurance. I don't plan on leaving the resort much so I am not too concerned but then again you never know. Anything can happen anywhere. I guess I kinda look at it as you can't really prevent these sort of things from happening. A canadian was just returned to Canada after being detained for 3 months when he was hit by a vehicle while he was in a rental. Brutal what happens in other countries.
