Anyone NOT Taking FI Name?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I'm not ubber feminist or anything, this is our first (and only!) marriage, but I just don't know if I want to take FI's last name. It's MY name, MY identity, it's everything about who I am wrapped up into one unique little word.

I've considered hyphenating my last name, so it would be my maiden name-his last name. I like the idea of that, and I think I could live with it. Everyone would know me by his last name, but all my documents would still have my maiden name on them.

Anybody else not taking FI's last name, hyphenating your last name, or even better, FI taking your name?

Hey,

I am not taking my Fiances name. He is from Quebec and they no longer do name changes when they are married. His mom doesn't share the same last name so i feel it would be weird for me to. I don't want to step on anyones feet in his family so i will do it their way. So as you see it isn't only "feminists" who do this anymore. I believe it is your choice and if your fiance doesn't mind, just keep you name. You can always change it later if you have a change of heart.

Good luck,

Amy

I live in Quebec and like Amy said, they don't do name changes here. Almost every women I know, young and old, have kept their last name. What happens sometimes though is that in non-legal situations they will be referred to using their husband's name.

OMG I am so glad other people are attached to their name too!! I told my FI that I want to hyphenate and he got a little offended of sorts! I too like my initials and have a strong attachment to my last name and I am a daddys girl so I can't see letting the last name totally disappear!

I finally did somewhat talk him into it by saying it would be a pain to have to change my bar licenses and all of that and all of my letterhead etc, etc, etc. So he said "ok you can hyphenate" So at least I will have the option of what name I want to use :)

Im hyphenating my husbands last name. 1. I have a son from a first marriage whos name is hyphenated with mine and it's important for him for me to do this. 2. my name sounds ridiculous without my last name in the mix :).. Yes my husband was a little disturbed by this since its not his culture to do this but he understood the why and the importance that it had on his stepsons life.
