The Importance of a Site Visit - RPRM

Recommended Posts

I just returned from 10 days at the RPRM. I was strongly considering this hotel for my wedding. The grounds are gorgeous and the pool is also great. Based on that alone, I would have booked this hotel for the wedding, as I am probably going to have 60-70 guests. However, staying there was another story. Please keep in mind that I did go when the hotel was full to capacity so that might have something to do with the bad food and service. I was sick for about 4 days from the food. At dinner one night, I was so sick I had to leave the resturant and when I ran out, my fiance told the waiter I the food upset my stomach and the waiter said that week they had been getting alot of complaints about the food. My fiance and I travel 3 times a year to the Caribbean, and I have never experienced this at any other hotel. Literally after almost every meal I ate there, I felt like my stomach was turning. Also, the service was lacking. My fiance and I go to the caribbean for the beach, not so much the pool since we have a pool in out apt complex, and the service on the beach was non existant. We asked two different waiters on the beach for drinks 2 different times and they never even came back! Also, the rooms are sooooo damp, especially the bed. When we were cheking out I told the front desk that the food made me sick, not asking for any money back or anything, and instead of just saying sorry to hear that, he asked if I reported it at the time, almost questioning me. I am sure my experience had alot to do with the hotel being so crowded this week, but if I brought my 60 guests to this resort at this time, I would feel horrible. I am not writing this to scare anyone, because we did have a few good meals, Krystal and Japanese, but I feel now more than ever that site visits are very important. We did a site inspection at the Cancun Palace and I cannot even tell you the difference in even the pina coladas. They were made fresh in the blender unlike the Riu where it was pre made and booze poured on top. I did see a few weddings at the RPRM and they were pretty though. I think the most important thing is to find a resort that fits you and your guests. I guess I feel so strongly about this because I am bringing alot of guests and do not want to waste anyones money on a bad resort. I understand that food in all inclusives are never the best, and people have different standards, but as long as it is edible and doesnt make anyone sick that is all I am looking for. I am even considering going down to the Cancun Palace for a long weekend to experience it before I make my final decison, but I stayed at the Sun Palace last year and it was excellent, so I am pretty confident in Palace resorts.

Katrina-I'm so sorry for your bad experience. I have to say that I stayed there for 7 days in January 2009 and had the complete opposite experience. I just had to comment because I don't want any of the RPRM brides freaking out. I constantly was being asked if I wanted drinks by the pool and didn't have problems with the food. I don't think they were completely full when I was there either. The dampness problem I did experience, but as long as we kept the AC on it went away.

Yes im with you on this... getting sick can happen anywhere, weve been places where we have seen this but never suffered ourselves and vise versa... We plan on booking for May 2011 here.

Like others on here, Im really sorry you experienced the resort like this and thanks for the info, i think the good reviews out weigh the bad one's though!!! Hopefully when we go it wont be as busy!?!? :-)
I can see your concern for your guests though with being so many of you!

Wish we were able to do a site visit but no way can we afford to do one so we will just have to go with our gutt i think :-)

I totally agree with you! I was set on having my wedding at the gran caribe glass chapel, however I changed my mind because we got horrible service! The chapel on the internet pictures looks georgous and in reality it is nice however the location is horrible. There is too much going on all around it can't imagine having a nice peaceful wedding there! I posted a thread on my review of what happened. If you can have a site visit I would strongly recommend one!

I am sorry you had such a terrible trip and thanks for giving a heads up. Please be sensitive to the fact that there are MANY girls that are already in the process of planning a wedding at RPRM. And there are many people, including myself, that couldn't afford to do a site visit. And I am happy to report that our wedding was more than can be expected!

I am really glad that you were able to rule out a choice that wouldn't work for you though! And food poisoning can happen anywhere. I hope you shared your sickness with the hotel so that they could pin-point any potential causes and prevent additional sickness.
