Does a TTD shoot really trash the dress?

For those of you who have done a TTD session, does it really "trash" your dress? I love the way these pictures turn out, but don't really want to ruin my dress. My dress is lace and I worry it won't hold up once wet. I have also thought about getting another more casual, less expensive dress that can actually be machine washed, but I am conflicted because I want these pictures to be associated with my wedding. Does everyone use their wedding dress for these shots? Comments or suggestions appreciated!
