Ack! I didn't like my hair and makeup trial! What now?

Recommended Posts

So I went on a site visit to Mexico this past weekend and scheduled a trial w/ the hair and makeup team recommended by my WC.

I loved the pictures from the makeup artists' website so I figured everything would be fine but the day of she had to do my makeup over THREE times b/c I thought it was overkill!!!!!!

As for hair, the woman did a great job of copying one of the half dozen pics I brought with me, but it started falling apart after about 1 hour.

Am I overreacting or is this normal to go through a few rounds of makeup in order to get it "just right"? Should I lose my $175 deposit and take my chances on another artist that I've never met before??

In the artist's defense, I did not bring any pictures so she didnt know what I wanted exactly though I did say "natural" a few times. As for the hair stylist, she may have kept my hair loose on purpose b/c I mentioned I'd be traveling later and was going to wash out my hair anyway. She did do a nice job overall but I would prob need to give her an EXACT picture next time to make sure nothing is lost in translation.

sigh, disappointing to say the least... but maybe I'm just not used to wearing so much makeup!??!

What I have experienced that the "in the mirror" look might be overkill, but on camera it is NICE. They have to put more on than what you would walk around with so that it will pick up nicely on camera. If you didn't take a picture with you, it was kinda unfair for you to assume that she would know what your interpretation of natural was. I would take pics of what you like your make up to look like rather than waste the deposit only to try someone else. IMO take pics of what you want and start early so that you will have enough time for them to get it right! Good luck

Yes I took pics but the lighting was off so its hard to tell just how much makeup I had on.

V-day - I think you're right. I'm going to bring lots of pics and insist on starting early in case I dont like it. Worst case scenario, I'm going to practice a do w/ a BM so that she can step in in case I really dont like the artist's look...

sigh...

I've never had any makeup artists in Mexico do my makeup but I have seen people who have had run-ins with makeup artists who work on the resorts that they have their weddings at...anyway, from what I've seen personally, they do tend to have a bit of a heavier hand. If you are a bit picky and are truly concerned (I know I was! lol), then I recommend doing your own makeup. If you're newer to doing makeup on yourself, or you're nervous about doing your own makeup for your wedding, I would recommend that you drop by your local MAC or Sephora and have them give you a tutorial with the products you plan on using. It can make a world of difference.

Good luck! :)

definately give EXACT pics. i'm from colombia and even with the language things get lost in translantion as you say... as for the make-up, remember that it will be much heavier than you'd normally do b/c of the pics. when i got my BD pics done for FIs birthday, i told the lady i wanted to look like myself, but flawless b/c FI doesnt like heavy make-up. when she was finished i thought 'holy crap'!! but she reasured me that it would look very natural in the pics and it did. if she had done it lighter, it wouldn't have held up in the photos!

with the hair, you have to kinda work with what god gave you. for example, i really want sexy "beach" type curls but my hair is just way to heavy and it doesnt hold curl well, esp in humidity. i would make sure that whatever style you choose will work with your hair type, that way the actual day of the wedding they can spray the crap out of it and you know it'll hold.

i wouldn't change up now....you've paid a deposit and your WC recommended them for a reason. trust her and i'm sure everything willl work out!! :)

I think having your BM as a back up prepared to be able to do something with your hair should you not like it is a good idea. PICS are extremely helpful to the artists for both hair and makeup so I recommend them as well. I think communication is always key too. Sometimes we as clients don't voice exactly what we want and then are unhappy in the end, and truthfully it is just because the vendor didn't know. So those would be my tips: pics, back up plan, strong communication!!!
