Travelling with a wedding dress

Recommended Posts

My daughter is getting married in Cabo San Lucas in April. She will be carrying on her wedding dress and will be hopeful that a flight attendant will accomodate her with a secure and safe place to hang or lay it out on the plane. The last time we traveled to Mexico we had to change planes in SFO and unfortunately my daughters luggage did not make it when we arrived in PVO. Lucky for her it did arrive a day later. She was okay for the short time that she was with out her luggage as she had taken my well traveled advice: In your carry on luggage- toothbrush, toilettries, cosmetics, hair essentials, clean undergarments, sleep wear, extra t-shirt or blouse and of course a swimsuit. I have also advised that for the wedding trip she include her wedding shoes. DO NOT CHECK YOUR DRESS OR SHOES!!!

I brought my dress on the plane and the airline let me board early and lay the dress in one of the overheads in first class. She also made sure no one put anything else in that overhead.

They offered the first class closet but the dress was too big to fit.

I got my dress at Saks and they stuffed it with A LOT of tissue paper so although it was big, it was not wrinkled and I did not need to do any steaming. I just unwrapped it the day before the wedding.

There's definitely some great info on this thread. I never would have thought of putting my shoes in my carry on but this makes sooo much sense. I'm in love with those things and would be heartbroken if they didn't make the trip!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good steamer? I tried to look up some reviews but they all seem a little vague.

I was MOH for a wedding in London once and tried to get the airlines to hang it in 1st class and they refused so I had to lay over the clothes in the overhead and it was very wrinkled. For my wedding, I am flying 1st class just so I can hang the dress in the closet. I would also recommend hanging in a hot shower to steam it out (maybe 30 minutes?).

We recently traveled to stay at the Riu Palace in Punta Cana as I was MOH in a wedding. My friends dress was severely wrinkled, no steamers in sight and of course no one thought of this lol, Like it has been mentioned before, the shower put on HOT for about half an hour with the dress hanging in there did the trick. We then left it in MIL room with air conditioner on high for the night.

These are good questions, and no matter what even if I have to roll my dress in a ball to put on my lap, it so is not leaving my side :)
