As professional photographer in Maui I would like to help you how to make choosing process little more easier.

Hire an Island photographer, they know the location (in case of rain they will know another great spot for pictures), minister (every minister have their own style), they know how to shout in a sun and you will have great sunset pictures because they did it so many times, and they never gonna be a late.

Mainland wedding are different from Maui weddings. Maui beach wedding takes only few hours instead of full day wedding on a mainland.

Since you have a small budget you should hire photographer directly and not using any wedding coordination services (every coordinator have a add on fees - they have to make a profit too).

Talk to your photographers directly, tell them your budget and what you are looking for.

Read a reviews on internet (google got great tools).

And I'm sure that you can find a great photographer on Maui to fit in your budget.

I totally understand wanting to keep a tight budget on a photographer. In my humble opinion, this is one area that I think if you skim on price you get what you pay for. I've heard numerous horror stories from friends and friends of friends who tried to find a cheap photographer and cried afterwards because their photos didn't turn out as nice as they had hoped. Be prepared to pay upwards of $1k for great photography. I would think you could negotiate a 1 hour shoot with a reputable photographer on the island?

 

We decided after much debate to spend the money and bring in a fantastic photographer from O'ahu - Frank Amodo www.amodophoto.com. He did my sister's wedding and several friends, and they're breathtaking moments captured on film.

Photography is so expensive in Hawaii period I think.  I'm from Oregon and they are far less here than Hawaii.

We went with Stephanie Sheveland.  She's reasonable and talented.  Easy choice!  I will say though, there are sooooo many talented photogs in Maui.  It's a really tough choice.  I guess it just depends on what your priorities are in your budget.
