Travel shots and Malaria pills - are you taking them?

I also am going for a piece of mind and getting all recommended vaccinations. I even created a page on on our web site with vaccination recommendations and options.

CDC is a great source for information.

They recommend going to see a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks.

Also, here is a link to Travel Clinics - they partner and specialize in providing the right vaccinations for the right destination.

i know this is an older post but for anyone who is concerned all you have to do is go the the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website. Their information is always up to date and would be the most accurate and reliable. Also a travel nurse/doctor would be very knowldgable (they refer to the website as well). One word of caution is that there is potential for side effects with Malaria pills and one needs to be mindful that the directions for each anti-malarial drug are different. Some require you to begin taking doses weeks or days before, others multiple times a day, and some require you to take it well after the end of you trip.My advice would be try to steer clear of doxycycline one side effect is yeast infection and Im not sure how sexy that will be on your honeymoon in a humid location oops.gif

you can always bring over the counter medications just in case. Youll be on the island 3 days prior to your wedding so if you feel anything coming on you should have time to work through it and adjust your eating behaviors. If youre that worried you can always ask you doc to write a on time RX for Zofran (anti nausea/vomit) or something like Reglan (SP?) and RX anti diarrheal.

I'm getting Twinrix and malaria medication, but only because I have a very sensitive stomach and my doc is pretty much insisting.  And considering I had a pretty bad case of salmonella last month and my fiance ate the same thing but only had a very mild case, I think, for me, all of the recommended meds are a good idea.

Whenever I go down south, I drink a tablespoon of Pepto-bismol every morning before brushing my teeth (with bottled water). I avoid any water that isn't bottled, any fruit that isn't peeled before serving (strawberries), and I'm always fine. Now, if that has anything to do with coating my stomach with Pepto I don't know - I'm self-medicating. But it's worked for me so I'll stick to it!  I also have the Hepatitis vaccines already... but won't be taking malaria pills. I always spray myself with bug spray in the evenings, never get too many bites down there whereas at home in Ontario mosquitos love me!
