Strapless Gown- Age Inappropriate?

Recommended Posts

Well ladies....I am an older bride....just over 40 msnwink.gif and I have it in my mind that I want a strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline. I am going dress shopping for the very first time this weekend (yeah!!) and as of now...I am set on a strapless trumpet or possibly sheath dress. Now...I am a plus-sized bride....and have large breasts. I am fully aware that some of these styles may not look good on me...but I would like to try them out and see.

Yesterday, a friend of my mother's commented that I needed to forget about a strapless gown as it would emphasize my breasts (kind of the point.) She insisted that a portrait collar would be best for me. She is a very fashionable woman and I must say, I felt a bit insulted.

Is there an age where wearing a strapless gown is just not done? LOL Am I too old to show some cleavage!! I don't want to look like a frump going down the aisle!!

I think that you should wear what ever you love! It is your day and you should not let other people change your mind if you have your heart set on something, and age should not be a factor. As long as you love it that is all that matters, and if emphasizing the girls then go sweetheart all the way and knock em' dead! good luck this weekend! let us know how it goes!!

i don't think there is an age... it should be whatever you feel comfortable in and no one should tell you what you can or can't wear cause of your age... i think if a strapless dress looks good on you go for it!!!

good luck with the dress shopping!!!

Hi!

I agree with the others -buy what you like and what looks GREAT on you.

That being said - some things to keep in mind. Us larger girls with bigger busts don't always look as nice in strapless gowns because of how they make us bulge out in the armpits or around the back. However, there are LOTS of girls on here that are in strapless gowns and are plus size that still look great. It will depend on the dress and what you wear under it.

If the point is to accent your breasts - why not try something with a plunging neckline in a halter style or similar? But anyway - I suggest trying on all kinds of different styles - sometimes what looks the best on you is something you normally wouldn't consider!

I agree. You should wear what makes you feel beautiful. I don't think you are too old to wear a strapless! However, although I haven't done much dress shopping myself I have learned from this site that you should try on every style of gown before you make a decision. Lots of people end up with dresses totally different than what they imagine.

I agree with the other girls... go for it! why not??

I know lots of 40-something ladies who look like a knockout in strapless gowns/dresses:-)

That said, I also agree you should try on different styles -- even ones you don't think you'll like, b/c if there's one thing I learned wedidng dress shopping is, YOU JUST NEVER KNOW! :-)

I don't think you'll really know what looks good on you until you try it on. Strapless dresses tend to look good on most people. I say just go with an open mind, try on the dresses you like and see what they look like on your body. I know I've bought dresses before that I never thought would look good on me and they looked great, and vice versa. Forget what your friend's mother said. Go with someone you trust and you'll find something that will look fabulous! Btw...40 is the new 30 wink.gif

I think you should try on a whole bunch of different dresses and get someone to take pictures of you in them. Front shot, side shot and back shot. That is what I did bc I thought I knew what I wanted, but what I actually picked was something completely different. Based on the pictures I found the style of dress I looked best in and then narrowed down dress based on that style only. The dresses I thought I wanted, I looked horrible in when looking at my pics..so glad I did that. Just a thought.. ....in the end, pick what you want....its your wedding day.
