Zoom Whitening

I am a hygienist and I have seen Zoom work really well. It is really pricey though so I usually try to advise my patients to get the trays so they have them forever. Like mentioned above, your paying for the instant gratification :-) Good luck and let us know how it went

Sometimes Zoom can also bring out "imperfections" that you might not have known you had. The girl who did mine had these 2 huge, white blotches on her one front tooth that she said were never there before the Zoom. She hated them, but there was no way to go back after it.

I too am a hygienist and I recommend to my patients to start using sensodyne toothpaste atleast two weeks prior to having the ZOOM done. I also recommend the ORal B fluoride rinse 2 weeks prior to the appointment as they both help with the sensitivity. I had the zoom done myself and although it didnt bother me the first day, I did find I had some sensitivity the following day for a few hours. If you do have some sensitivity the most it will last is about 24 hours.

Both the zoom and the trays give the same result, just in different time periods and with different prices. Its all based on lifestyle really. If you have the time to do the trays and you dont mind dealing with the "goop" as my patients call it, then do the trays. However if you are like most people, and dont have the time or just dont want to wait two weeks for results, then the zoom might be a better option for you. Both options have a "regressing phase" where you will regress a up to a 1/2 shade, so a touch up about 2 weeks down the road is not a bad idea with the trays the dental office provides you. Just remember that if you have any fillings or crown/bridge work, the zoom and take home tray systems will not change the colour of your restorations. So you will need to have those restorations replaced to match the newly bleached teeth. On the bright side, you now have a great guide for when you might need to touch your teeth up, bc once your brand new restoration is whiter then your teeth, you'll know its time to do a touch up. Unlike some of us, who dont have restorations on our front teeth and we probably should touch up but we dont see the need for it bc its not staring us blankly in the face everyday.( totally me - I should really get my trays back in...lol)

 

If you are thinking of having this done, the best bet is too get a consult with your Dentist / hygienist (usually they are free - atleast here they are) to see if you are a candidate for the ZOOM or the take home system.

Well, I got it done today and THIS is exactly what happened to me. On one of my lower teeth I had a spot that was a bit lighter and after Zoom it's more prominant now. My teeth were pretty white to begin with, so my results weren't eye popping, but they are whiter. I'm going back next week for her to even out the bottoms of my top teeth and replace that bonding I have on my front tooth. I think I went up three shades. For the hygienists on here, I went from a B2 to a shade on the bleaching charts.
The procedure was mildly uncomfortable and I got a couple of quick sharp sensitivity bursts through my teeth, but they went away right away.

Overall, I'm happy with the results, but if you have fairly white teeth already, don't expect to be blown away with the results.

I am a dentist and like people said, both work, but in my opinion if you have the time and are concerned with the cost get the trays instead. You can keep them for years and continue to do "touch-ups." You'll get the same great result. Also...for those of you complaining of the "white" spots...they will most likely settle down and not be so bright or you can bleach more to help even everything out. This is another advantage of getting trays instead...you don't have to go in and go through the whole procedure again and you can just put them in a few more nights. If any of you are in the KC area PM me and I'll give you a break on the trays!! I promise this is not a ploy to get new patients, just trying to help.

I did Brite-smile and loved it. I'm a black coffee drinker. The hardest part for me was to refrain from eating food that stains for 24 hours.

Jennybell has great advice. My DH and I did zoom about 3 weeks before our wedding. We both had major sharp pains in the last 20 minute session and for about 5 hours after that - pain was horrible and neither of us had sensitive teeth before then. I also had some discoloration from damage from braces where my front teeth had white blotches on them that panicked me immediately after treatment but they settled down by the wedding and were not noticable at all. We also had a burn on our inside lower lip - the dentist wouldn't admit they were burns, just said that it was a reaction, but they were totally burns (and this was after I did extensive research for a reputable provider). My regular dentist told me I should have had a flouride treatment which helps with sensitivity and that the barrier they put on gums and lips must have had a small tear. Thank god we did this 3 weeks before wedding or we would have been in real trouble with our lip blisters!

 

All that being said, we got really good results that made a big difference in pictures - I would do it again for my wedding, but nothing else! And I would go to my regular dentist who I trust and had britesmile rather than save a little money with zoom and an unknown dentist, even though I had read good reviews of his office. Be forewarned, I did not realize that tooth sensitivity meant sharp stabbing pains - if you get this side effect, it is really painful, but did not last beyond about 5 hours after and then only an occassional twinge for the next 12. Like Jess, I thought I was dying for those 5 hours though (and I swear I am not a wimp). I'm glad someone started this thread so people know what to expect and what to ask for.

So, the night after my treatment my teeth hurt...... bad. I took some tylenol PM to help me go to sleep and ignore the pain and I woke up this morning with ZERO pain. So, it was short lived. I went to drink a glass of red wine tonight and I found myself putting it down! I don't wanna re-stain my teeth! Ha!

I will admit, my teeth do look whiter. I'm going back Tuesday for her to do some cosmetic straightening of the bottoms of my upper teeth so they're all even and to replace the bonding on my front tooth. Hopefully my smile will be set for picture time!
