Hello ladies!!! How was everyone's weekend?

We are all moved into our new home and it was so nice to stay there last night, I had such a great sleep.

 

So, I have a question - who is getting married here before they leave, or after they leave, and who is getting legally married in Mexico?

FI and I are thinking of doing the legal thing here, before we go. Does anyone know how I can look into doing this?

The weekend was great but could have been longer!

 

Congrats on the new house Cara! Nothing like sleeping in your own bed in your own house for the first time! We moved into our place in December and I still can't believe it's ours!

 

I just started looking into the legal stuff this weekend since we're planning on getting married here before we leave. We actually went to the registry in Country Hills on Saturday to get our marraige license and it was closed!

Maybe we should looking into hiring a commissioner and a bunch of us have a big group legal day and split the cost! haha

Hey Cara, congrats on the new house! That must be so exciting for you guys to have such a fresh start to everything right now.

 

Getting your legal work done here ahead of time is actually pretty simple. You go to any registry and purchase your marriage licence (Service Alberta - Marriage Licences) which is valid for 90 days. Then you find a marriage commissioner (or church clergy) to perform the "ceremony" in whatever fashion you guys are comfortable with. There are minimal legal requirements/declarations that you each have to state but aside from those, you don't really have to do any vows or anything. You sign your papers and voila! You'll receive a marriage statement right away which can be used to start the process of changing your name on things like your drivers licence and about three weeks after you should be able to order an official Marriage Certificate.

 

Nadine had recommended her marriage commissioner to me a little while ago and she's a super nice lady who does the ceremony in her home for you. If you want I can PM you with her contact info, even if it is just to ask a few more questions!

we are doing it here first as well - it saves a lot of headache in translation and what have you.

 

i am a terrible secret keeper, so i don't know how successful i will be at keeping that secret from my parents and family. what do i say if they ask why we didn't sign a marriage certificate?!

 

we have looked at the list of commissioners in calgary and think we have chosen one who fits our personalities.

We totally had fake certificates to sign at the ceremony to make it look more official. Even though just the two of us signed adn then the 'minister'. Noone has ever questioned anything. The lady I used that Meaghan is talking about is really affordable and nice. I definitely recommend getting in touch with her!

Drycleaning Question: I bought my dress off the rack and am wanting to get it drycleaned. Went in for a quote today and they said $260... is this reasonable? I don't have a clue!

So I'm trying to understand here, hopefully someone can shed some light for me. I will probably call the registry for more information later too, so we need to purchase the marriage license prior to meeting with the commissioner, correct?

So Nadine, did you purchase 2 licenses?? And bring the 2nd "fake" one to Mexico?
