Calgary Brides!

Let us know how your alterations go, those of you who have posted about them. I'm a shorty and was not able to order my dress in a shorter length. Hey, they will only have to hack off , like, three feet or so! :)

My sister used a lady in Kensington a few years ago too when Victorian Bride was still open, and she was really good, but we couldn't remember who it was. Maybe it was Lillianas? Does she make veils too, 'cause we had my sister's church length veil made there too for $115. Kris would you know?

Hey ladies!

I went dress shopping in Calgary and had so much fun! Started at the Bridal Center and worked with Carma. She was extremely helpful but they didn't end up having "THE" dress. Went to Ethos, but sorry to say.......the worst service ever (sales assts were stealing dresses from each other and arguing in front of us....it was a mad house). I bought my dress at S2 Bridal on 11th ave (Sonia's Bridal 2nd store) and can't say enough positives about the help that I received. Ava was great...very professional yet fun and relaxed. My dress is a Pronovias and they had a lot of knowledge about the dresses in their store.

Does anyone have shoe store suggestions?? I love shoes and would like to treat myself to something special for the wedding!!

Hey TeNeil,

Glad you had a good time shopping. I've heard some good things about S2 as well. Had two friends buy their dresses there. I also got a Pronovias gown, but I got it at the parisian. I noticed that you're getting married in Feb. Did you shop a while ago? How long did they say for your dress to come in?

As for shoes, I have also been looking for something a little special. Let me know if you find anything!

I had an idea in mind, but went over when I found the dress! There is actually another thread in the wedding attire section with a poll on how much people spent on their dresses. Budgets were all over the place! Sorry, I have not taken the time to learn to post links on here!

I didnt budget for my dress but it ended up costing me just over $600 with tax. However with my first wedding dress I spent $1700.00 and vowed I would never spend that again for a dress I am only going to wear once. So Im okay with the price that I paid. I wish I could get some of the deals our friends down south get sometimes, but in the end Im happy with my choice and the price.
Hope that helps!

Hey TeNiel! smile29.gif

So sorry you had a bd time with Ethos. I know some of the ladies there can be unhelpful at times and even overbearing. I wish you would have met Betty. I went to SB off of Edmonton trail and although they were very friendly there, I found it frustrating that all the dresses were in a size 10 or less. That means you have to be a street size of 0 to 6!!!! Good grief!! The last majority of women are not that size. Average size of calgarians is actually 10/12 street size. So although I loved the dessey dresses there, I went somewhere else bc I could envision them on me only half done up. Im only a 12 and I couldnt get them to fit! lol

I havent gone the shoe route yet, but Nine west had a sale on a day or so ago. Maybe check them out. I think Im going barefoot so other then white flip flops, I think Im okay.

Hey ChristinaP,

I didn't go dress shopping until the end of September......I wouldn't suggest anyone wait this long because they said 4 months until my dress is in. That means I only have about 2 weeks before my wedding to get alterations.....could be a crunch!!

I found Pronovias gowns beautiful.......how long did they tell you for ordering?

Jennybell,

Thanks for the Nine West tip.......I love a sale!

Hwannamaker,

Lets just say that I went over my budget......like almost doubled it....oops.

I also didn't have a good experience at Ethos. Guess I should've asked for Betty. :) I went with my mom and her & I were picking out dresses that we liked, and then the sales lady (don't know her name) had me go into the change room and start trying some on, then she put some of the dresses back that my mom & I had chosen. And she was pulling dresses for me that I disliked, and kept trying to tell her what I was looking for. When I was changing my mom pulled a few other dresses, and the sales lady took them from my mom's hands and said, "No this one won't work".... "she won't like this one"...., etc. and then put them back. Umm, pretty sure my mom knows what I like! lol And then after about the 5th dress that the lady had me try on, that I tried to politely tell her wasn't what I was looking for, she finally said, "Ok then.. why don't you tell me what YOU like then." lol, I was thinking, 'haven't I been trying to?' lol.

I went into S2 to look at dresses as well. they were very friendly but I thought their dress selection was pretty minimial unless you were looking for those specific designers.

I budgeted $4000 for my dress (b/c I was going to have it designed and made by a canadian designer) and ended up spending $100 as I mentioned early. not too shabby.

For shoes I didnt go the traditional bridal route b/c Im not a bride whatsover-other than wearing a wedding dress. I got a pair of studded gold ballet flats from freepeople.com. You will see them in my planning thread when I post it next month.
