@breezie Have you got the dress back yet? I'm really curious to hear how it goes. I just got my dress this weekend and the first set of alterations is going to be done by the end of the summer, then I get to keep the dress from there on out. I'm worried because I still want to lose 10lbs before my wedding and I'm worried I'll have to have it taken in again so I'm hoping this little shop you found works out so if I need a second round of alterations I can go there.

 

Not yet! July 18th I will go in to make sure everything is perfect. I also am trying to lose a chunk of weight, but I wanted to get most stuff done. He said that if the dress had to be taken in some more or any other things needed to be fixed/altered he wouldn't change me anything. So that is a bonus! I will keep you posted!

Just my two cents, but I'd wait to about 3 months before the wedding before doing alterations, especially if you're planning on losing weight. I bought mine on sale as well, a sample gown. They cleaned it and gave it to me to bring back 3 months before the wedding for alterations. I'm so glad I did that. The dress didn't close when I bought it and I thought i'd have to put a corset back on it. I wasn't planning and I didn't think I could lose any weight, I had already accepted the fact. However, by the time the 3 month mark rolled around I was able to zip it all the way up , and it only had to be taken out a little around the hips.  That definitely saved me a few bucks in alterations . I guess if the store is willing to do any further alterations for free, then you could just do it now and later if needed, otherwise I would wait longer. I know it sucks because I've been wanting to see the final product for almost a year, but at the same time I think it's just easier to do everything that needs to be done all at once and knowing for sure that nothing else will change. 

 

Edit: I read your date again, for some reason I thought it was further away. I guess that it's not so bad having it altered now, then hopefully you have to take it in a little bit more in a couple of months

I already took my dress in. I had them put sweetheart neckline in, a corset back and sew in my slip with the crinoline. It didnt need to be hemmed or taken in at all. I wanted to make sure that main part was done, and then if it needed any further alterations he would do it at no charge. Im not certain if it will need to be taken in, but we will have to wait and see

I know that my height wont change (unfortunately haha) so the hem should be good.

makes sense then. I think 10lbs is a size change, so you might be surprised how much of a difference it makes. It's always easier to take in a dress than take it out though, so you'll be ok .

I'm picking it up today and it should be good to go . The lady there told me that sometimes it happens that when you do alterations everywhere else the hem is a bit different. At least it turned out that it was too long and not too short haha!

Yeah I'm hoping that she just takes it in enough and that with the lace up back I can still make it work. I'm just nervous about the hem. She went so fast with everything. I know she's a professional and knows what she's doing but going that fast makes me nervous!

 

I'm so happy for you that it worked out that it just needed to be shorted for you. That was lucky! You look stunning in it though!

That makes total sense. Kind of the same idea as when you lose weight your pants and shirts get longer as they aren't as tight.

 

From my experience it's 15-20 for a clothing size but since dresses are form fitted I agree that you may notice 10 lbs more than you'd think. That said though - we can't choose where we lose weight from that's why it's always a tricky business waiting and hoping alterations won't be needed. I kept hoping id lose 5 lbs from my back hahahah!!!!

best place for alterations and drycleaning in calgary??  My dress is off the rack and desperately needs a clean. I bought my dress from S2 and they work with sonias (same owners) - has anyone used sonias for alterations?

@@ashleynv I sent you a PM! If I had to do it again I wouldn't go to the same place for alterations for me (where I bought my dress). I feel like they way overcharged me. My mom got her dress altered with a lady that lives by our house and she paid a lot less for a lot of work haha and it looked great! I can ask for her name and phone number . I haven't heard anything about Sonia's

I went to Perfect Stitches in Beddington as it was close to home. She did a fabulous job and took pride in her work. They were also very reasonably priced.

I didn't have my dressed cleaned but the seamstress recommended Gilette and gives a discount.
