Welcome to the forum, Erica. I will also be a Playa del Carmen bride. We're seriously considering both the Gran Porto Real and the Royal, two sister resorts. Guests on a budget can stay at the Gran Porto and others can always stay at the Royal. Both seem nice in their own right.
