Posted a file, and I can't open it!

Recommended Posts

I posted a word attachment in the thread titled "What should I ask before we go?" in the Cuba room. The document is titled "Questions to ask resort to clarify on wedding package."

I'm on my computer at work, and I can't open it - it brings me to the "you do not have permission to access this page" screen. And in my User CP, its not listed under attachements.

Why can't I open my own document? I understand that you have to have a certain number of posts to access other peoples attachements, but I think I should be able to open my own attachement....

Thanks!

Yes, I've read that post already - my point is that its my own attachement that I can't open - plus, I've definately been able to open other attachements and so on on the forum- I have a whole file of templates and so on on my home computer.

I just want to be able to access my own attachement! I should have emailed it to myself, but my computer crashed last night and I didn't feel like waiting for it to reboot - its so slow. I didn't think there would be a problem with opening my own attachement.

And if you have to have 150 posts to open attachements, how come I've been able to open other attachements before now?

thanks.

It's no longer "your" attachment once it's uploaded. It's just an attachment. There is no "owner", other then the forum, once you've uploaded a file into a thread. The rules on the forum don't have exceptions. Imagine how hard that would be to keep track of? All attachments are created equal, at least as far as the way the forum runs.

When people think the system is dumb, I assume they don't know that there is a cost to each file attached & downloaded. So if you want to upload to the forum & then download from your work computer, you just used up a decent amount of bandwidth which has a cost. The former point system kept people from over-downloading. If you could download all you want, what would stop people from downloading the same file 10 times, instead of saving it on their computer to find later? Without the new system, there would be so many people joining BDW, downloading everything they can find, and never contributing. All of that makes the forum more expensive to run.

I thought points made a lot of sense, but people kept complaining. Now people keep complaining about the post count. There has to be a system to limit downloads. It's not just in place to aggrivate people.

As I said before - I would have emailed it to myself, but my extremely slow computer which the document is on crashed and I didn't want to wait for it.

Its not a dumb system, I think it makes a lot of sense to only let those who contribute use the resources.

So again, thank you both for clarifying - I'll be fine without it, and I'll just have to wait until I get home to get the darn file off my own computer.

I just assumed (incorrectly) that files that I post I would be able to download and open, particularly since it seems like the forum keeps track of who posts which files. (in user CP) Since the forum doesn't, it makes some sense that the post number then comes into effect.

I'm wondering if maybe the files I was able to open were ones from before the change occured. Maybe that explains how I was able to open a lot of them.

And people get frustrated with having to post 150 times because the vast majority of those first 150 posts are going to be meaningless comments. I don't know about other people, but I know that if I am going to comment on something, I want it to be actually contributing to the conversation - not just a random comment made to up my post numbers. I also only want to post if my topic a) hasn't been already covered, which normally it has, so I don't have to post, I only have to creep what other people have already discussed. This keeps the number of duplicate posts down, but does limit the number of posts I can make. or B) I only want to post if I have a question about something taht either hasn't been covered, or if I want further clarification. And finally c) I will post only if I feel I am giving a valid point or support to another persons question or post.

Jeepers. I wasn't complaining about how the forum was run, I just wanted to know why I couldn't open an attachement I had posted.

P.S. I'm having a bad day. Sorry if I am being mean/rude or something. I don't mean to be.
