H1N1 Vaccine??

I do not get vaccines for things like the flu. I will not get the H1N1 vaccine. In the past, the only years I got really sick from the flu were the years when I got a flu shot. In addition, the flu (and probably H1N1) mutates so quickly that by the time they put out a vaccine, its not even the same virus. I personally believe that we are over-vaccinating ourselves and our children, and creating "superbugs" that are immune to our medications and vaccinations. Wasn't there a fuss recently about giving your children medications? Its the same thing.

Now, I'm not against vaccines like polio, menengitis, and the like, because those we know are helping, and have been around for a really long time - the long term effects are minimal. And these shots are good for YEARS. But flu vaccines? That you have to get every year because the other one isn't good any more? Why would you want to pump your body full of bacteria and germs? If I could afford it, I would totally look into naturopathic and homeopathic remedies - they seem to have a lot more going for them than contemporary medicine.

This is just a difficult decision for all of us. I am sitting on the fence right now. I do daycare ranging in age from 1 year to 10 years, alot of my daycare children are getting the shots but some are not. I would say in the 20 years I have done daycare I have gotten the flu twice, the last one being a few years back. So for now I am going to sit on the fence.

I have to agree with Bholthof.. It just terrifies me. The idea of pumping my body with a vaccine that feels like it was so quickly put together. I have never gotten the seasonal flu shot either so maybe that makes me partially bias. I dont know. I hate that this is even a big contemplation for all of us. I almost wish I was in the health care system and then I didnt have a choice. Choices stink sad.gif

So no... will not be getting it. Wash hands, blow nose and gargle with salt! I have also looked into some of the naturopathic remedies.

I personally won't be getting the shot. I have never had a flu shot so I don't see why I'd get one now. In my opinion, those who are more vulnerable to the flu should get the H1N1 vaccine since it can cause complications to already existing medical conditions. As for me, I'm a healthy 26 year old who exercises regularly and eats right (most of the time!) and that's how my body will fight the virus.

The problem with H1N1 is that it can quickly become a serious lifethreatening illness in almost anybody. We just had two young kids (11 year old girl in Ottawa & 14 hockey player in Toronto) die who were perfectly healthy.

The vaccine was put together over the period of several months and has been used to vaccinate over 45, 000 people so far.

I understand its a difficult decision but I personally will be getting vaccinated because its not worth the risk not to. Those who end up having a serious bout of H1N1 can have respiratory failure in a matter of hours.

And for those are thinking about homeo or naturopathic medicine PLEASE PLEASE make sure whatever you buy has a DIN number on it. This means it's been approved or reviewed by Health Canada. If not, the contents can be a mystery and it's not regulated.

A good homeopathic remedy is called Muco Coccinum by Genestra. It is natural and homeopathic remedies generally cannot be overdosed and are safe for most people. Read the label to be safe. This remedy acts similar to a vaccine but *proven* long term to have no side effects. Muco Coccinum Homeopathic by Genestra

High doses of Vitamin C is also a natural antiviral and will help prevent the flu or colds. 1000 mg 2x a day is a good amount during the winter periods (or what your bowels can tolerate). Also, Oil of Oregano under your tongue or mixed with juice is an amazing natural antibacterial/viral/fungal.

I won't be getting the vaccination nor is my FI. I never got the flu either, but FI did twice, and last time he became very ill. He swore he's never getting the flu shot again.

To each their own, is the way I look at it. Do what you think is best for yourself.

People did have the H1N1 before, and got better own their own without going to the hospital, but unfortunately, others have died from. The regular flu does the same... some get over it, and others have died from it.

But there has not been enough testing IMO to determine the long term effects that could happen.

It is a tough decision - like everyone says, you have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and your kids (if you have them!)

I had my annual physical last week and my doctor said that I should get the H1N1 vaccine. However, I heard from a family friend that their dr. advised against it and even said "I'm not getting it".... yikes!

DH just went to Nanton (AB girls, you with me??) to get his today at lunch as he teaches at the high school there so it's easily accessible. They are open on Wednesdays starting today from 12-6. I think I'll try my luck at Avenida tonight or tomorrow after the crowds have hopefully died down. I've been back and forth on it but I think it's the right decision for me. I've also been more aware of hand-washing, face touching, etc. I hope everyone stays healthy no matter what you do!!
