May 2010 Brides!

Amy, you are SO not heartless for not wanting to change your name! And it's especially understandable since your dad passed away. I don't want to change mine either, so I've pretty much decided to ignore this particular topic for now. I don't know that I'll never want to change it, I just want the choice to be mine later if & when I feel like changing it. There's no one way to do this, in my opinion. A friend of mine waited 3 years til they had their first child to change her name & another waited until her license expired. Others change it right away. I think under the circumstances & stress of planning a wedding it's OK to put this off and allow yourself time to decide whether you'll change it or not.

oh and GREAT planning thread lady! So much fun! I love all the Etsyness floating all over the place! :)

Welcome Stacey!

I've got finals tomorrow & I'm sooooo not ready. This isn't gonna be pretty.

i know you said the two last names are similar, but what if you just kept your current one as an additional middle name and then took on the new last name? your dad's name would always be a part of you, yet you'd be able to share a last name with your husband and future kids... ?

Of course, I don't think you are heartless! Not at all. Completely understandable. Like Diane, can you just hyphenate it even though your FI's last name is similar or make your last name your middle name?

I think the decision to change your last name is a very personal one! I don’t think anyone should ever look at someone else as heartless just because they don’t want to! As long as your FI is supportive of the decision, I say keep it till you are ready! We are a very traditional family…so for me, I never thought twice about it!

Jesus Christ! All that just to change my last name. We better not get divorced or I'm going to be pissed! Lol. Thanks for the link.

haha, THIS is what it takes to make you not want to get divorced? haha, whatever incentive you need!

nah, i'm sure you two will be happy together for a very long time and you won't have to ever think about this stuff again after you're done!
