It's hard to say for FI - I've seen pics of girls in dresses with men in shorts - I think anything could work - just find a happy medium.

I love this dress! I do think you might want to ask FI to wear pants, but if he gets them in linen he'll be comfortable....my FI insists it feels like wearing pajamas. Also, he could change into his shorts later in the evening when you change into your party dress (if thats something you're doing) that way the change will be cohesive.
